Research shows that exposure to artificial fragrances, including scented candles, air fresheners, cleaning sprays, and scented personal products, can worsen respiratory health in children. These products often release volatile organic compounds (VOCs) such as limonene, benzene derivatives, and formaldehyde, which can irritate airways and trigger asthma-like symptoms.
Children are more vulnerable because their lungs are still developing, and they breathe more air relative to their body size.
