On what would have been the 5th birthday of their cousin, Alasdair MacIntyre, siblings Laila and Lachy took on a very special project.
With help from their friends Violet and Dahlia, this crew hosted a lemonade stand in loving memory of Alasdair, raising an incredible $400 for Caleb's Courage.
Thank you so much Lachy, Laila, Violet and Dahlia, for this act of kindness and for sharing Alasdair’s story. Your donation will support little superheroes fighting BIG battles, here in Cape Breton. 💜

đź’ś In memory of Norman Cameron đź’ś
On behalf of their loved one, Norman M. Cameron, family members Carl (left), Amanda (center) and Cameron (right) presented an incredible donation of $5,000 in gift cards to directly support Cape Breton patients.
Norman had a successful career in law in British Columbia, but his roots lie here in Cape Breton. While living away, he made sure to visit his family on the Island often, because for Norman, “Cape Breton was always home.”
Over the years, Norman had been accumulating Air Miles points, which his family was able to use for this wonderful gift.
We are so grateful for this donation in memory of Norman, which will help eliminate barriers to health care for patients in Cape Breton, when they need it most. đź’ś

Meet Shannon Sidney, the Renal Program Manager for Nova Scotia Health’s Eastern Zone. 💜
Shannon works with our Foundation to identify the needs of patients who rely on the Renal Unit and distribute funds accordingly. This, of course, is made possible through donor generosity to the Renal Fund.
Supporting 65 patients daily, the Cape Breton Regional Hospital Renal Unit delivers care six days a week to some of our island’s most vulnerable community members.
In her recent letter to donors, Shannon shared how donors are making a real impact on the lives of fellow Cape Bretoners facing kidney disease, as well as the current needs of the Unit.
"Kidney disease and the care it requires can take away some of the things cherished most. Precious time with family, the ability to work, financial stability and even independence. Working closely with each patient, my team and I see how important the Renal Fund is and how endlessly thankful patients are for the gifts that bring relief from the burdens of treatment, during an already stressful time.”
Have you or a loved one relied on the care provided by the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital? Do you feel pulled to “give back?”
This Radio Day, we’re rallying our community to support the purchase of life-saving equipment for the ICU. Radio Day celebrates fundraisers in our community, rallies for a focused cause, and shares health care stories all day long.
If you would like to support our fundraising efforts by sharing your (ICU) health care story, please send us a message. We’re happy to answer questions and provide more details. 💜

In July, we were joined by local McDonald’s teams, along with staff members from the Pediatrics and Renal departments, for this year’s McHappy Day cheque presentation. Thanks to the generosity of local McDonald’s and Cape Bretoners, an incredible $104,000 was raised for local health care.
This record-breaking total will allow the Foundation to purchase a Centralized Monitoring System for the Pediatric Unit, as well as two ultrasounds for the Renal Unit at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
Thank you to our local McDonald’s team’s and to everyone who supported McHappy Day this year!

Today marks one year since Claire Isabel Burke was born — a day her parents, Nick and Katherine, will forever hold in their hearts. In her memory, they’ve created Claire’s Comfort Closet, a special initiative to support families with babies in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
Claire’s time on earth was heartbreakingly short, but her impact is just beginning. Through Claire’s Comfort Closet, the Burke family aims to raise funds to purchase baby clothing, sleep sacks, toiletry items, gift cards, and other comfort items for families navigating the uncertainty and fear of a NICU stay.
“Having a baby in the NICU can be an anxiety-inducing and heart-wrenching experience, and things can happen quickly; when your baby is sick, everything else stops. If a baby is born prematurely, or suddenly requires extra care, a family may not have time to get the necessities – we want to make sure families have exactly what they need, so they can focus on their little ones.”

When you give to a charity, you want to know it will affect the people you care about. The Cape Breton Regional Hospital Foundation is proud to assure you that 100% of money raised stays in Cape Breton to treat our community.
In 1982, a group of community leaders, led by Cape Bretoner Jack Yazer, developed a vision – that vision was the creation of a health care complex designed to deliver leading edge medical services in Cape Breton – allowing more Cape Bretoners to receive care closer to home.
When construction began in 1990, the Foundation began fundraising. In 1991, they launched a $6M fundraising drive. $3M of that total was committed to hospital construction. $3M was committed to constructing and equipping a Cancer Centre that would offer treatment to those who were receiving care in Halifax.
Today, it’s the second largest acute care facility in Nova Scotia. Since 1991, the Cape Breton Regional Hospital Foundation has raised more than $38 million for healthcare in Cape Breton.
The Cape Breton Regional Hospital is the only hospital in Nova Scotia to offer all of the following services under one roof: Operating Rooms, Cardiac Services, Cape Breton Cancer Centre, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Pediatrics Unit, Renal Dialysis Unit, Intensive Care Unit/Coronary Care Unit, Palliative Care Unit, & Mental Health and Addiction Services
As the major referral Centre for Cape Breton, the Regional Hospital treats more than 100,000 patients each year, providing acute and trauma care, emergency services, clinical services, and surgery. Because of our donors, the Cape Breton Regional Hospital Foundation has been able to fund many important medical projects.
The Cape Breton Regional Hospital Foundation also holds multiple funds that are 100% donor funded, including: the Pediatrics TLC Fund, the Mom & Baby TLC Fund and the Cancer Patient Care Fund, Caleb’s Courage, etc.. These funds help patients and their families in times of need. Illness can be a financial burden for many of our patients at the Regional Hospital, and these funds help to alleviate some of the financial stress.
The Cape Breton Regional Hospital employs more than 1,800 health care providers who work with 270 hospital and community-based physicians.
The Cape Breton Regional Hospital Foundation is proud to say that every single dollar raised here in Cape Breton stays in Cape Breton. The Regional Hospital was built after much community fundraising. Today, after more than 30 years of giving, this spirit of charity continues and donors fund priority healthcare needs for Cape Bretoners.
