I’m sitting outside in the warm sun, listening to the ice melt from the roof, and realizing that the first signs of early spring are here.
In Ayurveda, late winter and early spring are known as Kapha season — a time that carries qualities of coolness, heaviness, and dampness. You can feel it in the snow as it becomes dense and heavy. You might notice it in your body too: feeling a little sluggish, congested, or fighting off a cold with excess mucus. As the days warm, the body naturally begins to melt and release the extra insulation we built up over winter.
The growing warmth of the sun supports this thawing process, helping to thin and move fluids. But it can also leave us feeling tired or foggy, as the liver and lymphatic system work a little overtime during this seasonal shift.
Ayurveda teaches us to balance like with its opposite. So when the season feels cool, heavy, and damp, we support ourselves with warmth, lightness, and a little dryness.
A few simple ways to support your body during this transition:
• Shift from thick, heavy stews to warm, light soups with vegetables and cooked greens.
• Add pungent, warming spices like ginger, turmeric, cayenne, and chili to stimulate digestion and help clear excess mucus.
• Enjoy simple stir-fries, bean chilies or light chicken and vegetable soups that feel nourishing but not overly heavy.
• Practice dry brushing (garshana) to stimulate the lymphatic system and move stagnant energy — it’s wonderfully invigorating this time of year.
Keep things warm, light, and simple as we move through this transition into spring. Your body knows what to do — sometimes it just needs a little support. 🌿
