𝐈𝐟 𝐘𝐨𝐮’𝐫𝐞 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐭𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐇𝐨𝐫𝐬𝐞’𝐬 𝐋𝐞𝐠 𝐋𝐢𝐤𝐞 𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐬… 𝐒𝐭𝐨𝐩. 𝐇𝐞𝐫𝐞’𝐬 𝐖𝐡𝐲

I’m seeing more and more pectoral tears and brachial plexus nerve damage showing up lately and it’s time we talk about why.

When you stretch a horse’s 𝐥𝐞𝐠 𝐮𝐩 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐡𝐢𝐠𝐡, especially through the front limb, you’re not only putting strain through the pectorals (the chest muscles responsible for drawing the limb back and stabilizing the shoulder), but you’re also overstretching the brachial plexus which is the main nerve bundle that runs from the neck into the shoulder and forelimb.

Let’s clear this up…. pulling your horse’s front leg up and out is not helping them stretch. It’s actually doing the opposite.

This type of “up and out” stretch might look like you’re getting more range of motion, but in reality, it can cause:

• 𝐌𝐢𝐜𝐫𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐬 through the pectoral and deltoid muscles
• 𝐋𝐨𝐬𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 through the shoulder
• 𝐁𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐩𝐥𝐞𝐱𝐮𝐬 strain or nerve damage leading to weakness, twitching, or uneven gait
• 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 to saddling or being touched near the shoulder
• 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 elsewhere in the body as the horse braces and protects the area

A proper stretch should follow the horse’s natural biomechanics:

✅ Keep the toe long and low, following the shoulder’s natural line.
✅ Encourage the limb to reach forward and down, not up and out.
✅ Look for signs of softness and relaxation, not tension or resistance.
✅ Never force or pull - the horse should move into the release willingly.

✨𝑸𝒖𝒊𝒄𝒌 𝑭𝒊𝒙𝒆𝒔 𝒊𝒏 𝑬𝒒𝒖𝒊𝒏𝒆 𝑻𝒉𝒆𝒓𝒂𝒑𝒚? 𝑯𝒆𝒓𝒆’𝒔 𝑾𝒉𝒚 𝑻𝒉𝒆𝒚 𝑫𝒐𝒏’𝒕 𝑾𝒐𝒓𝒌✨

When a horse shows pain, tension, or sudden changes in behaviour, it’s natural to want a fast answer, like reaching straight for antibiotics, pain meds, injections or what’s the next best trend for a treatment. But here’s why slowing down and investigating the root cause matters:

• 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝒃𝒐𝒅𝒚 𝒘𝒐𝒓𝒌𝒔 𝒂𝒔 𝒂 𝒘𝒉𝒐𝒍𝒆
Tightness or pain in one area is usually the result of compensations elsewhere. One quick treatment can’t rebalance the entire system.

• 𝑺𝒐𝒇𝒕 𝒕𝒊𝒔𝒔𝒖𝒆 𝒄𝒉𝒂𝒏𝒈𝒆 𝒕𝒂𝒌𝒆𝒔 𝒕𝒊𝒎𝒆
Fascia, muscles, and joints need consistent, progressive work to remodel and stay healthy.

• 𝑳𝒂𝒔𝒕𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒓𝒆𝒔𝒖𝒍𝒕𝒔 𝒄𝒐𝒎𝒆 𝒇𝒓𝒐𝒎 𝒑𝒂𝒓𝒕𝒏𝒆𝒓𝒔𝒉𝒊𝒑
Your horse’s therapy plan, home exercises, and your riding or handling habits all play a role.

• 𝑪𝒐𝒗𝒆𝒓𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒔𝒚𝒎𝒑𝒕𝒐𝒎𝒔 𝒊𝒔𝒏’𝒕 𝒇𝒊𝒙𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒄𝒂𝒖𝒔𝒆
A horse that “looks better” for a few days may still have the underlying restriction and more times than none, it often comes back stronger.

—> Listen to the signs. Treat the cause, not just the symptoms. Your horse’s future health depends on it.

𝑾𝒉𝒚 𝑰 𝑺𝒕𝒂𝒓𝒕𝒆𝒅 𝑻𝒉𝒊𝒔 𝑱𝒐𝒖𝒓𝒏𝒆𝒚 🤎

Horses have been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. Even as a kid, I noticed the little things like horses refusing to do their job, behavioural changes, lethargic symptoms or the kind of quiet signals that often go unseen.

I’d listen to the answers from vets and other professionals, but it often felt like something was missing. Too many times I saw quick fixes or a single session meant to mask a problem, without anyone asking why it was happening in the first place.

Those unanswered questions stuck with me. I couldn’t overcome the feeling that our horses deserved more than temporary relief or medications to hide the real underlying issue. That drive to understand the “why” is what led me to dig a little deeper.

I started studying therapies that looked at the whole horse including; massage, osteopathy, acupuncture, craniosacral work, nutrition, herbs, homeopathy and truly anything that could help me get to the root of what was really going on.

What began as curiosity turned into a purpose. This isn’t just a career for me; it’s the reason I get up every morning.

Elite Equine Performance Therapy was built on that belief: that every horse deserves care that goes beyond a quick fix, the care that listens, investigates, and helps them feel and perform their best for the long run.

This is why I started. And it’s what keeps me passionate about what I do every single day.

And just like that, we are now done summer and heading into fall! This summer has truly been our biggest season yet! I’ve had the privilege of meeting incredible clients, working with top performance horses, and reaching new heights for Elite Equine. It’s been such a rewarding few months, traveling alongside the WPCA and CPRA circuits, as well as working on horses of every discipline in Alberta. I’m beyond grateful for everyone who has trusted me with their horses’ care.

I’m so proud of each and every one of you and feel honored to be apart of your journeys. As we head into fall, I’m excited to share that there are some amazing new services and opportunities coming soon that I’ve been working hard behind the scenes to bring them to life.

That said, September is already filling up fast, we have just five spots left! If you’d like to get your horse booked in, now’s the time to secure your session.
