I contacted Stacy and told her what was going on, and asked if she could stop by the house to check my cervix. Like I said before, I have a history of longer drawn out labors, so I was expecting to be 4-5cm. I was shocked when she checked me and I was 8cm. I couldn’t believe how well I was coping.

Off to the hospital we went. We got there at around 9:20PM I believe. The birth pool was setup when I got there, which surprised my husband. He didn’t believe me when I said I was having a water birth. I hung up my birth affirmations, and I put on my labor playlist. I had a few contractions standing up and then I got into the birth pool and had about 6 minutes with no contraction. Everything was calm and I was content.

Then transition hit.... I was trying to escape the water. I was begging for an epidural, my team held me in the water, and coached me through my breathing. I remember everything being so intense, and feeling out of control and feeling scared. When the Fetal ejection reflex hit, I had ZERO control over my body. With my last 2 children, I pushed for over 2.5hrs with both. So I was not expecting this to go fast by any means.

After 3 contractions, at 9:47PM, my third beautiful baby boy was born into this world. A chaotic waterbirth, with the most amazing team of women supporting and coaching me through. He was a little stunned and needed a little bit of encouraging to breath, but was otherwise perfectly healthy. I had zero complications. The smoothest delivery I had ever had. And as chaotic as the ending was, it was the redemption birth that I was 1000% hoping for.

Birth Story Day! ✨🌊
When it came to the birth of my third baby, I had anticipated going over due. I was over due with my first 2, so I had expected the same this time around. I agreed to a membrane sweep at 38+6. I was 1.5cm. This caused minor braxton hicks, nothing major.
My next appointment at 39+6, I was 3 cm, another membrane sweep, and I went for a long walk after that in hopes that things would kick into gear. Contractions began, so I decided to do the miles circuit. Mild contractions continued about every 5 minutes throughout the day and started to intensify that evening. I decided to go to bed, in hopes that I would wake up in full blown labor.

Well, I didn’t. I woke up the next morning, on my due date with zero contractions. My due date, January 16, came and went as I expected. The morning of January 21, I was 40+5, and I woke up and was just READY to have this baby. I had texted my midwife, and ensured they had no other inductions that day and we agreed that I would take castor oil, and if I didn’t go into labor that day, we would do induction at the hospital the next day.

I took my first dose at 11 AM. It did nothing. No contractions. No upset stomach. Nothing. I was so discouraged and frustrated that my body wasn’t doing what I wanted it to do. I had been having braxton hicks for WEEKS and was sure that I should have gone into labor already. I texted Stacy, and she suggested taking another dose of castor oil, and having another membrane sweep. 2:30PM, I took my second dose of castor oil. Conveniently, just prior to that dose at around 1:30PM, things started moving.

Stacy came to my house at 3:15PM and said I was 3-4cm, and very favourable. She did another really good membrane sweep. We agreed to keep in touch that evening.

At around 4:30PM, I felt what I thought was another braxton hick. I was discouraged that nothing had started, so I decided I would take a nap. My husband was home, my kids were resting, so I figured, why not.

Midwives don’t just deliver babies- they deliver care where it’s needed most.

In rural Alberta, that often means driving hours, visiting homes, and showing up with heart and hands ready.

because every family deserves skilled care close to home.

And then the moment we had been waiting for sooo long we got to meet our son. It was such an unreal feeling it’s hard to explain. And the midwife said later that there wasn’t a dry eye in the room when he was born. 🥹 He got to be on me for at least 15 mins and then dad got to cut the cord. And they moved me to the bed to deliver the placenta yet, while they moved me daddy got to hold his son for the first time. All such unreal feeling. Like a dream. It took half an hour for the placenta to come out. And while I was pushing it out. I had Matthew on my chest skin to skin, and he was trying to look at me which was so cute.

The nurse that came for her shift during the night she stayed longer then her shift just so she could be there for his birth. Since she was there for a lot of the labor she wanted to be there for the exciting part.

And I had an out of body experience during pushing, what ppl call being in labor land. I had that more towards the end where I heard the ppl around me but at the same time I was like not there. My husband said that he noticed that, that I had looked at him but like I hadn’t recognized him idk it’s a very weird experience.
I thank God for this birth experience, even tho it was way longer and harder then I thought it would be. 💙💙

I Labored with the oxytocin until 12 am and then they stopped it since it made my contractions just too much, hoping it would give me some more breaks.
From 12 to 2 am I had lots of contractions and doing more different positions in bed during contractions trying to encourage baby to come down some more.

2 am they checked me again and baby had moved all the way back up into my belly. The midwife didn’t tell me how much I was dilated at that time, which made sense later, the nurse told me that I closed back up at least to 3cm since he went back up. I’m so glad she didn’t tell me cause it would have not helped my mind. So the midwife suggested to get some sleep since my contractions had also slowed down a lot since he went up.
So thats what we all did trying to get some sleep, me laying on the bed they put me in an uncomfortable position to encourage him to come back down.

I laid there thinking all the worst thoughts what might happen. And still had some contractions and I felt him move a lot.
So at 2:20 am I felt some wetness and i told the nurse I think my water just broke. And yes that’s what it was there was a big gush after that and more and lots more after, my goodness I have no idea how there could be so much water. I always wondered what that feels like and now I got to experience that and I’d say that is like a big motivation for you that things are going in the right direction. I just remember feeling lots of joy with that happening, joy cause it meant baby might come sooner then we think and we would get to meet him 🥹 which was the biggest motivator of all. So the nurse text the Midwives and told them what happened so they were back pretty quick since they were just in another room getting some rest.

I moved into the pool to labor since the contractions were very intense after my water broke. And it helped a lot with the pain.
Stayed in there for quite awhile. And my husband was beside me the whole time letting me squeeze his hands with contractions. He was such a great support thru the whole labor and delivery.

✨Birth Story Friday! ✨ 🌈
Mary shared her rainbow birth experience after a difficult loss. See her story below and stay tuned for more throughout the day!

We decided on an Induction at 40 weeks and 6 days - they gave me an option to induce early since we had a stillborn the year before. We decided we wanted to wait at least till he was over due. Secretly hoping he would come on his own before we would choose to induce, but he was in no rush to get out, so at my last midwife appointment on Wednesday November 27th a day after his due date, I did a membrane sweep hoping that, that would put me into labor, and also talked about being induced Monday the next week, if he wouldn’t have made his entrance till then, so all weekend we were hoping and waiting and doing the miles circuit and some adjustments crossing our fingers that he would come on his own before the induction date. I was really scared to get induced since the induction with Rose, our stillborn, was pretty rough and traumatic.

So Monday December 2nd came and I was so scared, but I didn’t let that hold me back from meeting our son, which I thought would be that day yet, little did I know what was ahead of me.
At 8 am we went in to get the cervadil placed, and went back home after to labor at home, they told us to come back at 2 pm. Contractions started at around 9 am and they were pretty consistent and not much break in between, I asked the midwife around 10 am if we could come back to the hospital since I felt more stressed at home then at the hospital. Again due to our past experiences I just felt more at peace at the hospital keeping track on his heartbeat. We agreed to go back at 12 noon, I started tracking my contractions at 10:30 am just to see how often i was having them since I felt like I got barely any breaks in between, the app said that they were about 3-4 mins apart, lasting about a 1 min and half.

In our early days bringing midwifery to the area she drove over an hour for every appointment, came to a hospital 1.5 hrs away since it was the only one we could have privileges at the time, and now we’ve supported their family in their wonderful home births

We will never stop talking about how grateful we are to this community, amazing clients and the relationships we build. Not only do we get to hold space for you, but your support & love for us has made this work blossom into something so special

Thank you ❤️
