On behalf of Family & Community Support Services, we want to share three posters they provided to us. This program is for children ages 6 to 12 that are experiencing grief through loss, death or separation as a result of death, divorce, deployment, trauma, etc.

If there are siblings that need support, they are placed in different groups because children often will follow the lead of a sibling and as such, need their own space to process their feelings.

Interesting fact!
It was 60 years ago today that the SUGAR BOWL BOWLING CENTER opened its doors for the first time to the Taber community. The Sugar Bowl was managed by Len Danforth, and Gerald Ingram was employed as the Pinsetter. The bowling alley was constructed in 1962 at our current location in Taber at the corner of 50th Street and 48th Avenue. After a few years, the bowling alley closed and in 1968, Dick and F***y Humphries purchased our location and relocated HUMPHRIES FUNERAL HOME from the south side, converting the bowling alley into the funeral home that we operate today. Dick and F***y continued to operate from this location until the fall of 1974 when Judy and Terry Reardon purchased the business and formed REARDON'S FUNERAL SERVICE, which they would rebrand as SOUTHLAND FUNERAL CHAPEL in 1982.

A columbarium is a permanent granite structure, that has been designed for the secure placement of cremated remains above ground. Each niche (space) may accommodate up to two urns.

In 2007, after receiving feedback from the community, Southland Funeral Chapel installed a single hexagon shaped, 72 niche columbarium in the Taber Memorial Garden cemetery to provide another option for families wishing to memorialize their loved one.

In the spring of 2019 we identified the need for additional niche space and in August of that year, Taber Town Council approved Southland's application to supply and install two 56 niche columbariums at the same site as our existing columbarium. In spite of the unforseen delays resulting from supply shortages during the pandemic, the new units were installed in October 2021.

Keeping in mind that his family is experiencing the most overwhelming grief as he was THEIR guy, Southland wants to acknowledge the loss of Brien McCandless yesterday. Brien has been working with us part time for about the last five years. We always appreciated his humor and the time that he gave to the families we worked with to help them through a difficult time. Please pray for his wife Jane, their kids and their grandkids to find a way through this difficult struggle. Everybody talks about Covid and the new normal but the new normal is not anywhere near this kind of experience.

We will miss you Brien!

Darryl and I want to congratulate one of our part-time funeral attendants, Howard Kehler on his promotion with the Taber Police Service from the rank of Sergeant to Inspector yesterday. We're proud of you buddy!
