Anosognosia is a severe lack of awareness of illness, not simple denial. People with anosognosia truly cannot recognize that they are ill. It affects more than 50 percent of individuals diagnosed with schizophrenia and can greatly impact their recovery and overall outcomes.
Understanding anosognosia is important to ensure timely and compassionate treatment đź’ˇ

Today we begin our 5-day Anosognosia Awareness Campaign.

We are launching this campaign to correct dangerous misunderstandings about anosognosia that delay treatment and lead to preventable harm.

ANOSOGNOSIA: The Invisible Barrier to Care

When lack of insight is mistaken for choice, care is delayed—and lives are lost. Anosognosia is a medical condition, not a civil rights debate.

Anosognosia affects up to 98% of people with schizophrenia and up to 50% of those with bipolar disorder. It is caused by changes in the brain—not stubbornness, denial, or lack of intelligence.

Understanding anosognosia is essential to ending preventable harm and ensuring timely, compassionate treatment.
