โ˜€๏ธ The Sun Dance is one of the most sacred traditions of the Cheyenne people and other Plains tribes. It takes place every summer when chokecherries ripen. This ceremony is about sacrifice, renewal, and giving thanks. During this time, dancers go without food and water for up to four days. Some also take part in a painful ritual where small wooden pieces are placed through their skin as a sign of strength and devotion.

๐ŸŒ… The ceremony happens in a special circular area with a sacred tree in the center. This tree connects the earth to the Creator above. Dancers focus on the tree as they move and pray. Their pain is not for harmโ€”it is an offering, a powerful prayer for their people, the animals, and the land they depend on.

๐Ÿชถ In the late 1800s, the U.S. government tried to stop the Sun Dance. They banned it and punished those who practiced it. Many were arrested, and some even lost their lives. But the Cheyenne people did not give up. They continued the ceremony in secret, risking everything to protect their traditions.

๐Ÿ“œ Today, the Sun Dance is still alive. It is held every year in places like Montana and Oklahoma. Despite all the challenges, this sacred ceremony survived. It stands as a powerful symbol of faith, culture, and the strength of a people who refused to forget their roots.

Mother Earth Day 2026 - Our Power, Our Planet | April 22

Indigenous Peoples have cared for Mother Earth since time immemorialโ€”guided by respect, responsibility, and relationship.

Today, we honour Indigenous knowledge, leadership, and stewardship that continue to protect the land, water, and future generations.

When we uplift Indigenous voices, we strengthen our collective power to care for our planet.

The Earth sustains usโ€”now itโ€™s our turn to sustain her.

04/22/2026

Aki Gizhiigad reminds us of our responsibility to care for the land, the water, and all living things. ๐ŸŒŽ๐ŸŒฟ In Anishinaabe territory, this responsibility is carried every day, through our actions, our teachings, and our connection to Aki.

Today is a good day to get outside, clean up our communities, and show respect for Aki in a good way. Every small action matters. ๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿ’š
