January is Alzheimer’s Awareness Month, and at Compass Homecare, we’re focused on raising awareness through education. Today, we’re highlighting sundowning and how it can impact individuals and caregivers.
For many people living with Alzheimer’s and dementia, the late afternoon and evening can bring increased confusion, agitation, and anxiety: a phenomenon known as sundowning.
While sundowning can be challenging for both individuals and caregivers, small, thoughtful adjustments can make a meaningful difference:
✔️ Keep spaces well lit
Bright, consistent lighting in the afternoon and evening can reduce agitation caused by shadows and unfamiliar surroundings.
✔️ Create calming environments
Stress-reducing, comfortable spaces with soothing music, familiar routines, and temperature-controlled sleeping areas help promote comfort and ease.
✔️ Plan for active days
Encouraging activity, appointments, and exercise earlier in the day can lead to better rest at night.
✔️ Maintain consistent routines
Regular schedules for meals, medications, and bedtime provide a sense of stability and reassurance.
Sometimes, even something as simple as a gentle, reassuring touch can help ease moments of frustration.
Alzheimer’s awareness isn’t just about understanding the diagnosis, it’s about learning how to support dignity, comfort, and quality of life for those living with it, and for the caregivers walking alongside them.
We’ve put together a downloadable infographic to help keep these tips front of mind. Please do share:
