February 13th is Wear Red Canada Day, as we continue to recognize February as Heart Health Month.

At Compass Homecare, we’re proud to stand with clinicians, advocates, and communities across Canada in marking Wear Red Canada on February 13th, a national awareness day dedicated to women’s heart and vascular health.

Heart disease remains the number one killer of women, yet women are still under-studied, under-diagnosed, under-treated, and under-aware when it comes to cardiovascular health. Wear Red Canada serves as a powerful reminder to be mindful, curious, and proactive about our heart health, and especially to pay attention to the unique ways heart disease can present and impact women.

As healthcare providers supporting clients in their homes, we know that heart health is deeply personal. From helping clients maintain activity and balanced nutrition, to supporting medication management and emotional well-being, we walk with individuals and families in making heart-healthy choices every day.

Why Wear Red Canada matters:

• Heart disease is largely preventable, and many risk factors can be managed through awareness and lifestyle changes.

• Wearing red sparks conversation, and conversations save lives.

• This day reminds us that self-care isn’t optional: it’s essential for loving and caring for others well.

And with Valentine’s Day tomorrow, it feels especially fitting to wear red!

From all of us at Compass Homecare, wear red with purpose and enjoy a happy Valentine’s Day filled with love, connection, and wellbeing.

We are happy to remind you that we're past the mid-point of winter! Days are getting longer again, and spring will be here before you know it.

As we move through the last of the shorter, colder days of winter, many of us feel the weight of darkness, isolation, and quiet. For seniors, these feelings can be even more profound. Loneliness and social isolation can take a real toll on mental and physical health.

At Compass Homecare, we see firsthand how connection, presence, and simple moments together can make a difference. A phone call, a visit, or even a shared cup of tea can brighten a day and remind someone that they are valued, thought of, and not alone.

This is your warm call to action for:

• Calling a parent or grandparent just to chat and catch up
• Inviting someone over for a short visit or dinner
• Share a walk when we get a break of sunshine!

Every small act of connection matters because mental health isn’t seasonal, but our support can be.

From your friends at Compass Homecare.

February is Heart Health Month.

At Compass Homecare, we’re proud to join with healthcare providers, community partners, and individuals across Canada in shining a spotlight on heart health throughout February, a month dedicated to awareness, education, prevention, and support for heart and vascular health.

Heart disease and cardiovascular conditions affect millions of lives, often in ways that are deeply personal and far-reaching. Heart Health Month reminds us that taking care of our hearts isn’t just a one-day event, it’s a year-round commitment to healthier lifestyles, mindful care, and compassionate support.

Throughout February, organizations like the University of Ottawa Heart Institute and community partners are hosting events, campaigns, and activities. From Wear Red Canada and Light the Capital Red, to educational conversations about women’s heart health, valve disease awareness, and cardiac rehabilitation, all to raise awareness and empower individuals to make heart-healthy choices.

As healthcare providers supporting clients at home and in the community, we believe:

❤️ Prevention starts with awareness — understanding risk factors, recognizing symptoms, and embracing healthy habits can make a world of difference.
❤️ Heart health is holistic — nutrition, activity, stress management, and meaningful connection all matter.
❤️ Support extends beyond clinical care — compassion, presence, and personalized care help our clients thrive.

This Heart Health Month, let’s take time to learn, share, and act for ourselves, our families, and our communities.

February 4th is World Cancer Day.

At Compass Homecare, we join the global community in honouring World Cancer Day, a day dedicated to raising awareness about cancer, encouraging prevention, and driving action toward better care and support for those affected.

This year’s theme, , reminds us that every experience with cancer is deeply personal. A story of resilience, hope, struggle, love, and strength. Behind every diagnosis is a unique individual with a life that extends far beyond the disease.

As healthcare providers committed to supporting cancer patients and their families at home, we see this every day:

❤️ Each journey is different — shaped by personal goals, values, and needs.
Compassionate, person-centred care doesn’t just treat symptoms — it honors the whole person.

❤️ Our teams are privileged to walk alongside individuals and families, offering dignity, comfort, and presence at every step.

❤️ On this World Cancer Day, we reaffirm our commitment to:

Putting people at the heart of care.Supporting not just physical needs, but emotional well-being.Listening to and learning from every story we are entrusted with.

Let’s continue to raise awareness, advocate for equitable access to quality care, and support one another.

January 21, 2026 is Bell Let’s Talk Day, Canada’s national day dedicated to mental health awareness, acceptance, and action. This year’s theme, “Taking a moment for mental health,” invites all of us to pause, reflect, and make space for well-being in our lives and communities.

Mental health matters at every stage of life, especially in later years. As caregivers, families, and communities, we often focus on physical health in seniors, but emotional wellness deserves just as much attention. For older adults, moments of connection, meaningful interactions, and knowing they are heard can have a profound impact on their sense of purpose and overall well-being.

Taking a moment might look like:

• Sitting down for a meaningful conversation — or reminiscing through a shared memory — rather than rushing through a task
• Playing a favourite song or a classic album you both remember to help lift mood and evoke positive memories
• Checking in with a simple, genuine, “How are you really feeling today?”

For seniors, who may face isolation, life transitions, loss, or cognitive change, these moments are not small, they are significant. They remind us that mental health isn’t just about treatment. It’s about connection, presence, and care.

Use this Self-Care Activity Sheet to inspire you to do something positive for you, or try with a loved one and do it together.

An Alzheimer’s diagnosis can feel overwhelming for individuals and for the people who love them. While memory and cognition may change, there is so much that still remains.

Even as words fade, the brain can still respond to familiar sounds, rhythms, and experiences. Music, in particular, has a powerful way of activating emotional memory: unlocking moments of recognition, calm, and connection. A familiar song can spark a smile, a hum, or even a memory long thought lost.

Beyond music, activities connected to a person’s core identity can be deeply grounding. We’ve seen individuals who spent their lives running businesses feel more engaged and at ease when given financial reports, spreadsheets, or a calculator, tools that allow them to step back into a role that once defined them. In those moments, they aren’t “patients”, they’re problem-solvers, leaders, and decision-makers again.

The ability to feel purpose.

The need for connection.

The importance of dignity and belonging.

Wellness in dementia care isn’t about correcting or redirecting. It’s about meeting someone where they are, honouring who they’ve always been, and creating moments of meaning through familiarity.

This January, as we recognize Alzheimer’s Awareness Month, we’re reminded that care goes beyond symptoms. It’s about preserving identity, nurturing wellbeing, and remembering that human connection always remains.

Why do aches & joint pain feel worse in winter?

If your joints feel stiffer or more painful during the winter months, you’re not imagining it.

Cold weather can cause muscles to tighten, reduce circulation, and make joints feel less flexible, especially for seniors living with arthritis or chronic pain.

Shorter days and less movement can also contribute to stiffness, making everyday tasks feel more difficult than usual.

What can help:

• Gentle daily movement to keep joints flexible
• Staying warm with layers and proper indoor heating
• Light stretching or chair-based exercises
• Maintaining a consistent routine—even on cold days
• Asking for support when pain makes daily activities harder

Winter can be challenging, but with the right care and small adjustments, comfort and mobility are still possible.

At Compass Homecare, we’re here to support comfort, independence, and well-being. Could your loved one use a little more support with all of the above this winter? Learn more at https://compasshomecare.ca/services/elder-care-senior-home-care/

January is Alzheimer’s Awareness Month, and at Compass Homecare, we’re focused on raising awareness through education. Today, we’re highlighting sundowning and how it can impact individuals and caregivers.

For many people living with Alzheimer’s and dementia, the late afternoon and evening can bring increased confusion, agitation, and anxiety: a phenomenon known as sundowning.

While sundowning can be challenging for both individuals and caregivers, small, thoughtful adjustments can make a meaningful difference:

✔️ Keep spaces well lit
Bright, consistent lighting in the afternoon and evening can reduce agitation caused by shadows and unfamiliar surroundings.

✔️ Create calming environments
Stress-reducing, comfortable spaces with soothing music, familiar routines, and temperature-controlled sleeping areas help promote comfort and ease.

✔️ Plan for active days
Encouraging activity, appointments, and exercise earlier in the day can lead to better rest at night.

✔️ Maintain consistent routines
Regular schedules for meals, medications, and bedtime provide a sense of stability and reassurance.

Sometimes, even something as simple as a gentle, reassuring touch can help ease moments of frustration.

Alzheimer’s awareness isn’t just about understanding the diagnosis, it’s about learning how to support dignity, comfort, and quality of life for those living with it, and for the caregivers walking alongside them.

We’ve put together a downloadable infographic to help keep these tips front of mind. Please do share:
