Love this!

Today was one of those moments that reminds me exactly why I love what I do.

A young patient came into the clinic for her very first custom swim plug and when it came time to pay, she proudly pulled out a little green piece of paper she had written on herself: “$100$”.

It wasn’t about the money, it was about her independence, her excitement, and the way she understood how important it is to take care of her ears.

Moments like these make everything worth it.

Hearing health is for everyone, and stories like hers make it personal.

In this video, I explore how hearing loss impacts our ability to understand speech, often in unexpected ways. I illustrate this with a graphic showing that while normal hearing allows for clear comprehension, even mild hearing loss can lead to missing words and filling in gaps. As the severity increases, understanding becomes increasingly difficult, with severe profound loss making it nearly impossible to grasp the message. I want to emphasize that when someone says, "I can hear you, but I can't understand you," it's not a matter of attention but rather the limitations of their hearing. I encourage everyone to be mindful of these challenges and to consider how we communicate with those who may be experiencing hearing loss.

The Benefits of Wearing Hearing Aids
Hearing loss affects millions of people worldwide, but thanks to modern hearing aids, individuals can significantly improve their quality of life. These small yet powerful devices offer numerous benefits, enhancing both physical and emotional well-being.
1. Improved Communication
Hearing aids amplify sound, making it easier to follow conversations in a quiet room or noisy environment. This helps reduce misunderstandings, allowing users to engage more actively with friends, family, and colleagues.
2. Enhanced Mental Health
Untreated hearing loss has been linked to cognitive decline, depression, and social isolation. By restoring auditory input, hearing aids can help keep the brain active and reduce the risk of mental health issues.
3. Increased Safety
Hearing is crucial for detecting important environmental sounds, such as alarms, traffic, or someone calling for help. Hearing aids enable users to stay alert and respond quickly to potential dangers.
4. Better Quality of Life
Being able to fully participate in social activities and enjoy entertainment, like music or television, greatly improves overall life satisfaction. Hearing aids allow users to reconnect with the world around them.
5. Professional and Academic Success
For those in school or the workforce, clear hearing is essential. Hearing aids help users stay attentive in meetings, classrooms, and discussions, boosting confidence and productivity.
Hearing aids are more than just tools for hearing – they are gateways to a fuller, richer life. If you or someone you know experiences hearing loss, consulting a hearing specialist can open the door to these remarkable benefits.

A recent study led by Campos and published in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society found that hearing aids can reduce our chance of falling by 50%.
The study targeted those over the age of 60 who had hearing loss. The researchers evaluated the prevalence and risk of falls among hearing aid users and non-users. The same factors were analyzed between a separate group of regular hearing aid wearers (who used the devices for at least 4 hours each day) and inconsistent/non-hearing aid wearers. Participants who wore hearing aids were 50% less likely to fall than those who did not wear hearing aids. In addition, people who wore hearing aids for at least four hours per day had a 65% lower risk of falling.
These findings indicate that correcting hearing loss with hearing aids can enhance not just our hearing but also our safety

What is the relationship between hearing loss and loss of balance?
If you suffer from hearing impairment, your brain has to work much harder to help you hear and comprehend language, leaving "fewer cognitive resources available" to help you navigate various situations.

In other words, untreated hearing loss might reduce our awareness of our surroundings, leading to stumbling, falling, or worse.

Untreated hearing loss may increase the risk of falls:

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, one in every four older people falls yearly, more than 14 million people. Unfortunately, the probability of falling grows as we age, and one prevalent cause may surprise you: untreated hearing loss.
Studies show that untreated hearing loss increases the chance of falling by 30%, and the severity of hearing loss increases the chance of falling even more.

Your hearing can be permanently and prematurely damaged by loud noises; prolonged exposure may result in a 30-year-old having the hearing of a 60-year-old.
Additionally, hearing loss often occurs gradually, so individuals frequently don't realize it until it's too late. It's critical to understand the best practices for protecting your hearing so that you won't later have regrets.
Preserving hearing is particularly important since hearing loss can occasionally lead to a negative feedback loop that becomes worse. People often turn up the volume when they can't hear, and it might do much more harm.

Thus keep in mind that volume is the most important factor. "Listen at the lowest volume at which you can hear the information you wish to hear.

If you're wearing headphones in a noisy environment and "you still hear the music or understand the words being said, you've likely turned up the volume high enough to overcome surrounding noise," which suggests that the volume you're listening at must to be higher than 80 dB, enough decibels to damage your hearing.
To reduce background noise without interfering with sound levels, use headphones that block it out. Earbuds that fit securely and block out irrelevant sounds, over-ear headphones that seal around your ear, and any listening devices that have noise-canceling technology are all viable alternatives.

How Earbuds and Headphones Can Gradually Damage Your Hearing:
Headphones are probably a regular part of our everyday life, whether we use them for phone conversations, zoom meetings, listening to music, or viewing social media. But do we lose our hearing more using earbuds than any different kinds of headphones since the earbuds may fit closer to our ears?
It looks reasonable that we would assume earbuds are bad for our hearing since they carry audio directly into the ear canal, whereas other headphone designs that sit over or on the ear provide sound from a longer distance. "However, what matters is the sound level at the eardrum, not where it comes from."
If you want to avoid hearing loss when using headphones, there's a simple rule of thumb. It's known as 80 for 90 as you can comfortably listen at 80 percent of the recommended level for total of 90 minutes every day." If you listen quietly, you receive more time; if you listen loudly, you get less time.

What Is a Hearing Aid?
A hearing aid is a compact electronic device designed to enhance hearing. It is typically worn in or behind the ear and functions by amplifying sounds, making it easier for the wearer to listen in various environments. Hearing aids are useful tools for those who have difficulty hearing, helping them to communicate more effectively and enjoy a higher quality of life.

How Do Hearing Aids Work?
Hearing aids improve hearing through:
Microphone: Captures sound from the environment, converting it to digital signals.
Amplifier: Increases the strength of signals tailored to the user’s hearing loss.
Speaker: Converts amplified signals back into sound, directing it into the ear.
Advanced models differentiate important sounds from background noise and may offer wireless connectivity with devices for an enhanced hearing experience.
