I am a registered physiotherapist and I have been working in York region providing government funded Physiotherapy for over 25 years.
13 years at York Central Hospital (Mackenzie Health) in a rotating position including outpatient rehab, respiratory, neurology, surgical orthopedics, long-term care, pediatrics and outpatient cardiac rehab. Most recently, the past 12 years at Saint Elizabeth Healthcare providing homecare physiotherapy for acute postoperative orthopedic conditions, falls prevention, acute and progressive neurological conditions, regaining strength and endurance after a fall or medical episode, developmental and orthopedic pediatrics, and for providing individualized home exercise programs for health and wellness. Most recently a significant decrease in visits per client. The mountainous paperwork, offsite liability and supervision of Physiotherapy Assistants, and reporting to both agency providers and CCAC has significantly decreased the time spent on direct patient care. And it is for this reason I have chosen to leave publicly funded services and go into my own private practice doing Homecare Physiotherapy. I have always loved my profession, especially in homecare because it allows me to spend sufficient one on one time with each client to truly determine his or her Rehab needs and goals. I am a true believer in the importance of exercise in the acute rehab phase. More importantly I believe in exercise for good health and illness prevention at any age. I am also a registered Authorizer with the Ministry of Health- Assisted Device Program and can do the applications for mobility equipment (which provides government funding for 75% of the cost of walkers) as well home safety assessments.
