We’ve got an important update! 🚨

Because of the public outcry from farmers and local food supporters like YOU, the Alberta government has announced they are pausing the new On-Farm Slaughter restrictions that took effect on July 2, 2025. 🙌

They’ve heard our concerns and recognized that the new rules could severely impact small farms. They’ve committed to re-engaging with producers and gathering more feedback before moving forward.

But this is not over.
A pause is not a reversal.
This is a chance to push even harder to protect food freedom, animal welfare, and the future of small farms in Alberta.

We need to keep the pressure on to make sure these restrictions are either removed or significantly changed. Without your voices, this could easily return as-is.

Reverse Alberta's On-Farm Slaughter License Changes

Why does on-farm slaughter matter so much to us? Because it matters to our animals, our farm and you—our community.

The nearest government-inspected facility is over an hour’s drive away—one way. That’s a long, potentially stressful haul for animals that have spent their lives peacefully on pasture. We believe in low-stress handling, in honoring our animals right to the very end.

Using government plants also means:
Extra transportation (added fuel costs) plus having the means to transport (stock trailer).
Kill fees, disposal fees, inspection fees—all costs that get passed on to you, the consumer
Long wait times that don’t always align with what’s best for the animal or the farmer

With already high feed prices, we’re doing everything we can to keep local, ethical meat affordable for you. Forcing us into distant, expensive and overloaded government systems drives prices up and makes it harder for small farms like ours to survive.

On-farm slaughter isn’t just about convenience—it’s about animal welfare, food affordability and keeping our food local.

We want to keep doing what’s right for our animals and for our community. Please keep standing with us as we push back on these new restrictions that limit on-farm slaughter and hurt small producers.

Small farms are now capped at 5,000 lbs live weight per year.
This limit makes it much harder for YOU to buy local, ethically raised meat.

No public debate.
No consultation with farmers or consumers.
Major blow to local food, animal welfare and your freedom to choose where your food comes from.

This isn’t just a farmer problem. This is a consumer problem.
If you care about knowing your farmer, sourcing low-stress, pasture-raised meat and keeping your food dollars in your own community—this directly affects you.
This decision shrinks your options. It makes local meat harder to find. It forces people toward big processors and grocery stores.

Albertans deserve the right to grow and buy local food freely.
Please join us in calling on the government to revisit this decision and stand with Alberta’s small producers.
