Kneehill Funeral Services

Kneehill Funeral Services We are experienced, caring and attentive professionals who personally provide for every aspect of your loved one's funeral service, cremation and burial needs.

My name is Ed Stephan, and along with my wife Terry we are the owner/operators of Kneehill and West View Funeral Services. We are experienced, caring and attentive professionals who personally provide for every aspect of your loved one’s funeral service, cremation and burial needs. I have over 30 year’s experience as a funeral director/embalmer in Alberta. I have worked since 1989 in the Three Hil

ls, Trochu and Olds areas. I am the only full time employee and along with my wife and a dedicated assortment of part-time employees have been in operation as Kneehill Funeral Services since 2008 and West View Funeral Services since 2013. We have a funeral home in Three Hills, Olds and a funeral home and crematorium in Trochu. I honestly love this work. I do not have an answering service; I hate them, especially in our industry. I believe that we have and do provide above quality service at extremely reasonable prices. We believe our service and merchandise prices are fair and have published the prices of eight basic packages on our website. We actively promote the participation of families in memorializing their loved ones: it may be as simple as acting as a greeter at the register, ushering the congregation, to making their own urns, cremation containers or caskets. We also actively work with Alberta Government Agencies such as AISH and are Funeral Service Providers for the Red Deer Memorial Society.

Mary Lynn (Pin) Theresa Baker passed away on July 25, 2025 at the age of 72. She met the end of her life with clarity, peace and humour following a diagnosis of terminal cancer.

She is lovingly remembered by her husband Ron; daughters Kimberly (Jeremy) Smith and Wendy (Andrew) Smith and her two cherished grandsons, Desmond and Hank. She is survived by her brothers and sisters Karol Kamenka, Vickie Lapshinoff, Pat (Anne) Kamenka, Louis (Brenda) Kamenka, Charlene (Paul) Christoffersen, Frank (Mary-Anne) Kamenka and many nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her parents Lud and Joy Kamenka.

Pin loved deeply and without hesitation. She loved her husband and their many journeys whether they were moving across the province, playing guitar on the porch, hiking or holding hands on the couch. She loved her daughters (and their wonderful husbands). She was so proud of their accomplishments from catching their first frogs to their karaoke parties to their latest hiking obsession. She loved her grandsons and lived for every moment they spent together. She loved her family and friends, finding the special magic in each person.

Pin saw life as something to be explored with humour and curiosity. If she was reorganizing a closet, she made it seem like a treasure hunt. In the kitchen, she approached food with playfulness – experimenting, improvising and with a frozen pizza ready just in case.

Her home, full of whimsically chosen treasures, rocks, mushrooms and plants, is the perfect reflection of the fun and wonder she brought to everything she touched.

Though she is no longer with us, her influence will continue to shape the lives of those who knew her. In every shared story, silly moment, kind gesture or spontaneous adventure, her impact lives on.

As per Pin’s request, no public service will be held. In lieu of flowers she asked that donations be made to Kirsten’s Place (through the Mountain View Emergency Shelter Society), a shelter for those affected by domestic violence in Olds. Her family extends their heartfelt thanks to the MAID care team and to the exceptionally kind and gifted staff at the Olds hospital. Please know you made a real difference in her final days.

Hugh James Brown
January 15, 1949 - June 6, 2025

Hughie Brown passed away on a Friday afternoon in early June. Those of us who loved him cannot believe his big presence is gone. He was always a positive character, no matter what life threw at him. He was fearless and successful in business, however his life was complicated with tragic events including the losses of his beloved brother and business partner Mac, his beautiful love of his life Georgia, and his dear youngest son, Houston. Hugh loved his family, and his friends, with a tender heart. His passions in life were cars, music, and gardening.

In his thirties Hugh built and operated his company known as Mainly Music which had seven stores from Vancouver to Toronto. Later he and his wife Georgia relocated to the USA working exclusively for a Canadian company, Larrivée Guitars, helping to build it from the ground up. Finally, in failing health, Hugh moved back to Canada in 2014.

Fortunately, the last five years of Hugh’s life were spent on Aberdeen Avenue in the Village of Carbon. These years were some of Hugh's best since Georgia passed away. This was thanks in part to the friends he met there. Hugh was always fun to be around and there was never a dull moment. The wake trail of his life was full of amazing and often crazy stories, His was certainly, a life to remember. At long last, he is together again With Georgia and Houston. The three of them will be laid to rest together in a plot close by to his grandparents, John and Jessie McMurchie in Delia Cemetery. Rest well my brother Hugh, it looks like those of us who loved you, will have to learn how to live without you.

With great sorrow we have to announce the passing of Colette Rose on June 12, 2025 at Three Hills. Colette was born in Trochu Jan 18, 1955 to Charles and Yvonne Van Cauwenberge. When she started school, she didn't know English, as French was only spoken at home and most of the aunts and uncles spoke it as well. With the help of the Nuns she picked it up quickly. A school friend stated that she was a bit of a wild child, or Tomboy not afraid of anything or anyone and would try anything. Junior High came around and her parents thought boarding school would help her academics, so for the next 3 years she attended school in Prince Albert, Sask. While there she wrote many letters home to parents. She had a great love for horses and dogs, even wrote to her favorite dog Bingo.

Colette returned to Trochu for high school. She was very athletic and excelled in track and field events, in both Jr. and Sr. high. Reaching Provincials in both Saskatchewan and Alberta in track and field, she also loved playing senior high volleyball. She was a life guard and swim instructor at the Trochu pool, and was very good at playing softball.

In 1971 while in High school, she met Gary Rose from Olds on a blind date, with one of his friends. It soon turned to love and they were married June 22, 1974. While they were living in Olds, Gary was offered an oilfield operating job for HBOG near Three Hills. So that spring they moved back, setting up their mobile home at her parent's farm. They had 3 boys Eric 1978, Ernie 1979 (living only 3 days and passed away on their 5th anniversary) and Steven 1981. She loved the summer picking bales and piling them and the fall driving grain trucks at harvest. They started to build their home across the road from the farm. Colette was a great help, not only locating Gary's misplaced tools and or the odd flying hammer but measuring, cutting and nailing, she could do most anything required on building their
home.

When the boys were able to ride on sleighs behind the ski-doo she put almost 30 miles on that winter just around the farm and nearby fields. As the boys got older you could find her most days at the arena watching practises or games. Gary and Collete were often complimented on the boys upbringing, and Gary states this is mostly attributed to Colette. In 1988 they ventured into the elk industry. Colette took on the role of bottle raising a number of orphaned or neglected elk calves and a even few deer. The elk calves soon thought she was their mother and would follow her around outside while doing activities.

Colette enjoyed helping her mother with the Trochu History book by translating a number of Mr. Trochu's letters when he established the area. She had a great love of family and tried to make life simpler for everyone around. One of her favorite things was to go camping, in the foothills or mountains, and riding her horse with her cousins Bill Dallas and Maurice Frere through the wilderness. Another favorite past-time was doing needle point, many hang all around the house and many others given to loved ones. One in particular has nearly 96,000 stitches in which she completed in only 6 months.

In 2015, she had her first COPD flareup on her 60th birthday. She got an unplanned helicopter ride to Calgary via STARS. There the ICU doctors told her that she would not make Christmas 2015 and but she again proved them wrong. She not only made that Christmas but 9 more. It is said that having end stage COPD is like have to run marathon every day for the rest of your life. She did it for 10 plus years but in the end, it got the best of her.

Colette was predeceased by her parents Charles and Yvonne, son Ernest, sister-in-law Tara, brother-in-law Ron and numerous aunts and uncles and cousins. She is survived by her loving husband Gary, her sons; Eric (Kelly) and bonus grandson Nikolas and Steven (Tara), grandchildren Maddex and Sierra. She will also be greatly missed by her brother Pat, aunt Theresa, nieces and nephews, in-laws and many, many cousins. In the end, just 9 days short of their 51st wedding anniversary she told Gary that she had no regrets in life. She will be forever in our hearts. Colette can rest in peace, as her marathon is over.

Her funeral will be June 24 at 11 am @ St. Anne's Catholic Church in Trochu, Internment to follow at the Trochu Catholic Cemetery. Fellowship to follow at the Trochu Community Center. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to STARS.

Doris June Christie (nee Peterson)
June 19, 1930 – May 29, 2025

Doris June Christie (nee Peterson) was born on June 19, 1930, at her family's home in Trochu, Alberta, the fifth of six children to Magdalena and Gustave Peterson. Her early years in Trochu were marked by a love of learning; Doris attended a local one-room school and was the first in her family to pursue high school studies in Three Hills. She completed teacher training at the University of Alberta - Calgary Branch. She returned to Kneehill County to begin her teaching career at just 17 years of age, requiring her father to sign her first teaching contract.

On February 18, 1950, Doris married James Panton Christie, and together they built a life grounded in love, hard work, and an unwavering commitment to family. They were blessed with eight children: Barbara, Sandra, Brenda, Wade, Deborah, Linda, Lorna, and Charles. Doris and Jim instilled in their children the importance of family, ensuring that their greatest legacy was the bond of siblings who are best friends and allies.

Doris was a master organizer and devoted homemaker. She worked tirelessly with Jim to build up their farming enterprise. Dad always said he couldn’t have done it without Doris by his side. She planted a large garden, spent weeks canning and was a skilled seamstress. Doris never failed to create moments of joy. Whether organizing summer evening softball games, packing picnics for after church, or serving as a chauffeur to eight children, she was always there when her family needed her.

Doris carried her love for education into her volunteer work within the community. She was active in the Home and School Association in Trochu, where her leadership saw her rise to area director, then provincial president, and eventually vice-president of the Home and School Association of Western Canada. Her commitment extended to provincial education as she served on the Curriculum Development Board, ensuring her contributions enriched the lives of countless students and educators. At home, she quietly assured each of her eight children attained secondary education.

Doris and Jim were avid travelers, beginning with weeks at the lake, tent camping adventures with the family and exploring the world together to connect with friends and family across the globe. They retired to the farm while spending their winters in their home in Trochu. Mom spent her final years at St. Mary’s Care Centre and the family will be forever grateful for the loving care she received there.

On May 29, 2025, Doris peacefully passed away at St. Mary’s Care Centre in Trochu, Alberta, held in the arms of her family. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Jim, mother and father, Magda and Gust Peterson, sister Margaret and brothers, Albert, Robert and Douglas, beloved son-in-law, Tom, and great-great granddaughter, Zaria. She is survived by her children, Barbara (Benedict), Sandra (Edward), Brenda, Wade (Margaret), Deborah (Philip), Linda (Larry), Lorna (William) and Charles (Rochelle), 50 grandchildren and partners, 44 great grandchildren and partners, two great-great grandchildren, and her brother, Ken.

Sweet dreams, Mom. You will be forever remembered, and we thank you for your legacy of love and family.

A Celebration of Life will take place at the Trochu Community Centre, June 9, 2025 at 2 P.M. Arrangements are entrusted to Kneehill Funeral Services. In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests donations be directed to St. Mary’s Health Care Centre, St. Paul’s United Church, or Trochu Community Centre.
