During this cold snap we want the public to know that each area shelter offers overflow beds when their regular beds are full. Please spread the word that as it became colder Urban Abby opened up more overflow beds funded by the Thunder Bay District Social Services Administration Board. Shelter House has overflow beds when Urban Abby is full and as an emergency measure Grace Place Out of the Cold has an overflow area. There will not be anyone left out in the cold who presents themselves to the area shelters and Shelter House also has the Street Out Reach Services (SOS) that can transport to Salvation Army if they have space. When the temperature plummets past -30 degrees we also give our clients bus tickets to go to PACE in the morning. Everyone who has donated warm clothing, mitts, hats, coats and jackets they are all being put to use. If you have donated food we are blessed to feed our overnight clients a hot supper, hot breakfast in the morning and give a bagged lunch to go. We also serve a community meal Mon Tues and Wed from 1:00-4:00pm. Thank you to all the hard working services making sure the homeless have a place to stay. Thank you Thunder Bay! Please share the Shelter System Emergency Overflow Plan Flow Chart.

The first of 2026 is grim but poignant. Context matters. Be kind to our unhoused neighbours, it is a tough time out there.
