More on early specialization. This article speaks to youth female soccer, but the trend of early specialization is common across most youth sport.

I didn’t enter the travel soccer system until age 13. For the female athlete of today, this is frowned upon, in fact, judged by her friends. Her parents are questioned by their neighbors, and she’s forced into chasing the word “elite” as young as age...

How we view aches and pains as an adult is influenced greatly by our parents / carers perspectives early in our life (O’Sullivan et al 2008).

It is a culturally ingrained belief to view the body as a machine and to equate pain with damage / injury.

“We grow up understanding pain is essential for survival. It is the alarm system that protects us from actual or potential physical threat; the warning signal that tells us to withdraw our hand from boiling water or that something requires attention such as a sprained ligament or an unseen tumour.
However, pain can also occur in the absence of nociception (or injury) such as with some acute pain states; headache and most back pain, or pain that persists beyond healing times (beyond a year?). In this instance pain is not usually a signal that damage is occurring to our body and can become unhelpful when it prevents us from engaging in normal activities” (Caneiro et al 2020).

It is on this basis and my opinion that early participation in sports sets our relationship up with pain for life. When you participate in a contact sport like rugby, soccer, martial arts or even non contact sports like skateboarding or climbing....you are never 100%, you learn very early on that you are ALWAYS training around one ache, then a different one and the process is never ending.
To this day I have simply always got some pain or ni**le (or massive injury!) that I’m moving around and it’s an illusion to think we can be pain free or even injury free.

It comes with the package of consistent exposure to things that give us freedom and quality of life in our bodies.

In another life I believe I would have been a Physical Education (PE) teacher; the true gate keepers to public health and self management ?
