Are you looking for new recipes this summer? Searching YouTube for recipe videos can be a great way to find new things to try and follow along as you cook. I thought I would share a couple of videos that I found fun.

The first is from Rainbow Plant Life and starts with mango salsa (20 mins)

A longer video is summer dinner bowls from Acre Homestead (60 mins)

Summer is a great time to take time off, slow down, get outside and enjoy the nicer weather. I know I feel refreshed when I take time off, whether it be to add a Friday off to make a long weekend, or to take a week to travel, go camping or even to relax at home. My son and I love to go hiking, whether close to home or away!

I don’t need to find a statistic to demonstrate the benefits of time off – you know that getting away from your regular routine offers that chance to recharge and think differently. Finding time to rest, explore new places locally or through travel, and spending time with the people you love are all great reasons to plan time away from the everyday.

As I plan to take a week off in July and August, I’m encouraging all my patients to see where they can fit in time for rest this summer. Even if it’s just the occasional long weekend or a week at home, time off can improve your mental health, help you beat exhaustion and overwhelm, and give you the space you need to breathe.

As for me, I will be following my own advice to take time off this summer. But I’m still booking patients, now 3 weeks ahead, so please check online or contact me at the number below. Also my office is still open for patients to refill supplements!

Foods are our friends. They power our bodies, giving us the energy we need to stay alert at work, pursue our hobbies, hug our kids.

Except, as it turns out, until they’re not. Sometimes, the very foods we think are good for us turn out to be causing us symptoms including skin irritations, eczema, acne, anxiety, fatigue, joint pains, and digestive discomfort.

One way to identify the culprits is to try a food sensitivity test.

In my practice, I use a blood test through Lifelabs to analyze the effects of 220 foods. I test for delayed hypersensitivity reactions, which are IgG antibodies (immunoglobulin G - the most abundant type of antibodies bound in the blood) that can last up to 72 hours in the body.

The test results come back in a week, and I help patients interpret the results. Typically we try to remove the top reactive foods for three to four months and then slowly reintroduce them into your diet. Common offenders may be gluten or dairy, but can also be foods you didn’t even expect. By avoiding these "trigger foods", we let the gut heal. I can also prescribe supplements to help heal the gut.

I furthermore test for candida/ yeast growth in the gut through these tests - which can cause symptoms of brain fog, fatigue, and yeast overgrowth infections. Again supplements can help fix the problem.

If you're feeling frustrated by digestive discomfort, skin conditions or any of the other symptoms I noted above, it might be worth trying a food sensitivity test to see if you can find relief. Connect with me today to see if it might be a good fit for you.

Why work with plants?

Botanical medicine is part of my practice. But not everyone knows what that means. As a naturopathic doctor, I am trained to prescribe plants that can help patients boost their health and wellness. Whether they come in the form of herbal teas, tinctures, capsules and other preparations, plant-based solutions can work well to support some conditions and help patients move towards better health.

Botanical medicines are the subject of a growing number of clinical research studies, and the majority of plants used by naturopathic doctors have been proven safe and effective by scientific and clinical research.

Some examples of plant-based recommendations I make most often are:

• Milk thistle for liver health
• Ashwagandha for stress and burnout
• Passionflower for anxiety
• Echinacea for boosting your immune system

Just as some patient treatments can be preventative, some medicines can be completely natural and have the positive effect you’re looking for.

Staying on my recent theme of summertime tips, I thought I’d share a few more that I’m always reminding patients about, not to mention family and friends. Set yourself up for a successful summer by paying attention to these daily practices and you’ll cut some potential summer stressors by avoiding burns, bites and more:

𝗨𝘀𝗲 𝘀𝘂𝗻𝘀𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗻
As the temperatures rise, so do UV levels and your chances for sun damage. Remember to apply sunscreen before spending any time outdoors (even when it seems cloudy) and reapply regularly for continued protection. Look for a minimum SPF of 30. I know this can be a battle with children, but making the effort to get their sunscreen on, and adding a hat as well, is really important. Today’s weather forecasts mostly include UV levels, so keep an eye on them as well so you’re informed.

𝗪𝗮𝘁𝗰𝗵 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝗾𝘂𝗶𝘁𝗼𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗸𝘀
Getting out into nature for hiking and cycling can be a huge benefit to your mental health and physical wellbeing. But it’s less fun when you return home with bug bites and stings. Invest in bug spray and remember to apply it before you venture out. Watch out for ticks as well, which can cause Lyme disease and often ride inside unnoticed on clothing. Before you go indoors, monitor yourself for ticks and other insects that you don’t want to bring with you.

𝗦𝘁𝗮𝘆 𝗵𝘆𝗱𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱
Another summertime hazard happens when you don’t drink enough water, or get too much sun. In addition to applying sunscreen regularly, be sure to bring water with you. Thirst is a signal that you need water, but often by the time you’re thirsty you may already be dehydrated. So be proactive by taking water breaks throughout your activities. If you’re feeling the effects from the sun, get into the shade, slow down or curb your activities. Learn about the signs of heat stroke so you can know how to avoid it.

Have fun this summer, just be prepared as you get out there!

Summertime is upon us, finally! I just wanted to let you know about my schedule so you can plan your visits.

Just as I recommend to all my patients, I take time off to rest and refresh. This year I’ll be away for some time in both July and August.

Please remember to book appointments well in advance as I'm booking new patients two weeks ahead of time now.

But I would love to help if I can, so please feel free to book a 15-minute discovery call where we can chat about your health issue and I can let you know about ways that we can work together.

You might also want to visit my website at www.drjeanniedoig.ca, which can help you to learn more about my practice. Plus, I have blog posts and videos that may be helpful to you in learning about some of the conditions I treat most regularly. Don’t hesitate to reach out! And happy summer!

Summer approaches - what better time to get more movement into your routine?

Last week, I shared some recipe sites. This week, I thought I’d share some healthy activity ideas!

Remember that Health Canada recommends adults 18 to 64 get active for 30 minutes a day, five days a week.

And since the best exercises are the ones you’ll stick to, why not choose ones that you genuinely enjoy? Here are some that you might try adding in or back to your routine:

𝗚𝗮𝗿𝗱𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 – bending and walking, raking and yes, pulling weeds, are all legitimate movements and get you plenty of sunshine and fresh air at the same time.

𝗖𝘆𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 – taking your bike out on a short ride around the neighbourhood or onto a local trail can re-activate muscles that you don’t use as much on a standard walk.

𝗦𝘄𝗶𝗺𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 – if you like the water, why not see what’s available in your area? Many community pools open up in the summertime with family swim or lane swim times, and nearby beaches can also make a fun day out.

𝗛𝗶𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 – see what nature trails are available nearby and plan an afternoon away. Bring the kids or call a friend to share the adventure together

𝗩𝗶𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗳𝗮𝗿𝗺𝗲𝗿𝘀' 𝗺𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲𝘁𝘀 – walking doesn’t have to be in a straight line, so plan a day to visit nearby neighbourhoods or towns where you can saunter and sit. Fairs and festivals can be another good way to get engaged while spending time mostly on your feet!

Do you have suggestions on healthy summer activities? Share your ideas in the comments below!

Happy Victoria Day long weekend! Viewed by many as the traditional start of summer, many people choose this weekend to start their vegetable garden or plant flowers. And as summer approaches, many want to cook lighter, healthy meals, maybe even as a way to use some of that bounty.

I think the start of summer is also a great time to look for new recipes. I browsed a few websites to share some healthy summer salad options. Scroll through and see if there's one that you'd like to add to your meal rotation, and then plan a night to try it out. It's even an opportunity to get kids and family involved in meal prep! Let me know which ones you decide to try and bookmark these links to return to all summer.

Happy Naturopathic Medicine Week!

Across Canada, naturopathic doctors are celebrating the profession we love and our dedication to helping patients live their best lives.

For me, the week is both a valuable opportunity to raise awareness about naturopathic medicine, but also reflect on the reasons I got into this work.

I’ve been a practising as a naturopathic doctor in Port Alberni and Tofino since 2007. After earning my Honours Bachelor of Science in Human Biology from the University of Toronto in 1999, I trained for four years at the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine in Toronto, graduating in 2006.

Over my years in practice, I've developed a specialty in helping women to feel their best. I regularly treat:

• hormonal imbalances
• menstrual problems
• sleep problems
• menopausal problems
• digestive problems
• adrenal and thyroid dysfunction

I am trained in functional medicine testing to address the root cause of patients’ symptoms. I am also trained hormone replacement therapy. I have prescription rights in BC.

Over the years, I have enjoyed developing long-term relationships with my patients. I like seeing them move into better health and find new ways to improve their lives by finding healthy lifestyle changes that work for them.

In celebration of Naturopathic Week, tell a friend about your experience with naturopathic medicine. Or if you've never tried it and you want to improve your health or tackle a health issue, contact me to set up a discovery call and see how I can help!

As a naturopathic doctor, I love sharing research on prevention! Here’s a new study published recently on the CBC website that notes lifestyle adjustments that people can make to cut the risk of developing stroke, dementia or late life depression.

The numbers supporting prevention are impressive: previous research had shown that taking action could stop or slow at least 60 per cent of strokes, 45 per cent of dementia and 35 per cent of late-life depression.

The new research was conducted by the University Health Network in Toronto and looked at data from 59 studies to identify the risk factors.

Four preventative factors have an impact on brain-related conditions:

- Regular cognitive activities (such as reading or doing puzzles)
- Moderate or high levels of physical activity
- A feeling that your life has purpose
- Low to moderate alcohol intake (less than one drink a day)

Two additional factors decrease risk of developing a brain-related conditions:

- A diet high in vegetables, fruit, nuts and dairy (and reduced red meat, sugar and salt)
- Social engagement

Lifestyle changes can also help prevent eleven factors that increase the risk of the above brain conditions:

-High blood pressure
-Kidney disease
-Smoking
-High blood sugar
-Poor or disrupted sleep
-High body mass index
-Hearing loss
-Depressive symptoms
-General stress or stressful life events
-Pain
-High cholesterol

For more information, check out the article "Tackling these 17 factors could cut your risk of stroke, dementia and late-life depression" by Alexandra Mae Jones on the CBC News website.

Prevention is part of my everyday work with patients, so If you have any of these conditions, I can help you create a plan to reduce or eliminate them. Contact me to set up an appointment.
