The School of Kinesiology was founded as the School of Physical and Health Education in 1969 and graduated its first class with an Honours Bachelor of Physical and Health Education (HBPHE) degree in May, 1973. Since 1969, there have been several name and program changes. Currently, the School of Kinesiology (established in 1994) offers three major undergraduate degree programs, a Graduate Diploma in Professional Kinesiology and a Masters of Science degree at the graduate level.
Since 1973, graduates from the School have pursued a wide variety of careers. Many have become elementary and secondary school teachers and administrators while some have used their degree as a stepping-stone to becoming physicians, chiropractors, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, athletic therapists, and university professors. Others have become facility and sports administrators, fitness programmers and consultants, and more recently Kinesiologists employed by industries, hospitals, clinics, and other health related organizations or institutions.
Kinesiology became a regulated health profession in Ontario in 2007. The College of Kinesiologists of Ontario provides the option for graduates wishing to become registered as professional Kinesiologists.
The undergraduate programs were previously reviewed in 1992/93, and 1999/00. The programs were reviewed in 2011/12 under the new Institutional Quality Assurance Program (IQAP) for Ontario. The program also received re-accreditation from the Canadian Council of University Physical Education and Kinesiology Administrators (CCUPEKA) in December 2011 for a seven year period.
