Ontario is home to the largest population of trans and non-binary people in Canada. But for many, aging with dignity isn’t guaranteed.

Barriers to healthcare and discrimination increase dementia risk for trans and non-binary older adults, and make accessing safe, affirming dementia care more difficult.

Everyone deserves respect, safety, and support. 💙

Dementia isn’t just more common in women; it affects them differently. Women are also more likely to take on caregiving roles, often without the support they need.

If a person living with dementia has become lost or missing, it is an emergency!

• Contact 911 immediately to report that the person is missing (informing police that the person has dementia).
• Try to get a sense of how long since you last saw the person.
• When police arrive, provide them with information you have assembled in the “Identification Kit," including a recent photograph.

The Young Dementia Supporters Toolkit has launched! Designed for youth in Grades 5 and up, this Toolkit helps young people understand and discover ways to support those living with it in their family or communities.

This project was made possible through a year-long collaboration with the University of Waterloo and the Research Institute for Aging, with funding from the Retired Teachers of Ontario Foundation. It was co-designed with the wisdom and insight of people living with dementia, care partners, and youth.

LGBTQ+ older adults are more likely to experience social isolation — a known risk factor for dementia.

They may also face discrimination or fear being “out” in care settings, which can affect the support they receive as they age.

S*x and gender shape how people experience dementia — from risk factors to diagnosis to care. That’s why it’s vital to build dementia support systems that are safe, inclusive, and affirming for everyone.

This Pride and beyond, let’s ensure no one is left behind.

This week of National Indigenous History Month celebrates Indigenous languages, cultures, and creative expression, all of which play a vital role in how dementia is understood, experienced, and supported in Indigenous communities.

Culture is care. From traditional medicines to storytelling and community-based research, Indigenous ways of knowing must be part of how we approach dementia care in Ontario.
