This National Men’s Day, we’re shining a light on the importance of understanding how dementia affects men differently.

Research shows that:
• Men have a higher risk of mild cognitive impairment (Brodaty et al., 2013).
• Depression in men is often underdiagnosed due to social expectations (Emslie & Hunt, 2009).
• Androgen deprivation therapy for prostate cancer has been linked to a higher risk of dementia (Jayadevappa et al., 2019).

Recognizing these differences helps improve care, early detection, and support for everyone affected by dementia.

Say hello to Sharon, our incredible Executive Director! 👋💙

Sharon brings unwavering dedication to everything she does. Her leadership is rooted in compassion, clarity, and a deep commitment to making a difference in the lives of those affected by dementia.

Fun fact! - Sharon is a Kundalini Yoga Student, Practitioner, and Teacher, and she loves playing the Gong to promote relaxation in herself and others. Her energy helps us stay centered and intentional in everything we do.

When asked what makes her work with the Alzheimer Society meaningful, she shared:

"I am honored to serve as the Executive Director of the Alzheimer Society of Thunder Bay. One of the reasons I chose to join this organization is because it offers the opportunity to engage in work that is deeply meaningful, impactful, and truly makes a difference.

I am committed to building a strong, healthy, and sustainable workforce and culture, one that remains unwavering in its dedication to elevating our presence and expanding our reach in support of people living with dementia, their care partners, and communities across Northwestern Ontario.
