Jennifer had been deep frying outside when she stepped on an unstable deck board, which caused the table where she was cooking to shift. She lost her balance, and her face, scalp, chest, right arm and torso were hit by hot oil. She was rushed to the Sunnybrook Ross Tilley Burn Centre where she underwent multiple surgeries to treat third degree burns over 20 per cent of her body.

“When my kids asked how I was healing, I told them, ‘Mommy’s getting better because someone chose to donate skin.'” – Jennifer, Skin Recipient.

Marya, a vibrant elementary school teacher, was at home preparing a quick bowl of instant noodles when a sudden spill caused boiling water, oil, and sticky noodles to land on her skin. She sustained severe burns to her abdomen and thigh, and required donated tissue to help prevent infection and give her skin the protection it needed to heal.

“Before my burn, I had no idea how someone’s skin could help so much,” Marya shares.

Thanks to her tissue donor, Marya is now healing and getting back to the life she loves.

This is Rio. He’s all about friends and family. People are his passion. And maybe video games and basketball, too. He surrounds himself with the people he loves the most and nurtures those relationships. Happiness is a simple equation for Rio: Family and friends + doing stuff we love together = mega fulfillment. We think he’s on to something. Clearly, Rio lives well. He also intends to Leave Well. Rio is registered as an organ and tissue donor. Organ donation is close to home for Rio. “Seven years ago, my grandmother needed a double lung transplant,” he says, “So when the opportunity came to give back, I took it.”

His grandmother’s transplant changed his family forever.
Now, he’s giving back. 💚
