I’m Tammy from Oak & Rose Counselling.
You may have heard of EMDR and wondered what it actually is.
EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing.
It’s a therapy approach that helps your brain process experiences that feel stuck — especially ones connected to trauma, anxiety, or distress.
Sometimes, when something overwhelming happens, the brain doesn’t fully process it.
Instead, it gets stored in a way that keeps it feeling present — like it’s still happening now.
EMDR helps your brain do what it naturally knows how to do:
process, integrate, and move forward.
In sessions, we use something called bilateral stimulation — often eye movements or gentle tapping — while you bring attention to a memory or feeling.
This helps the brain reprocess the experience so it becomes less intense, less triggering, and more integrated.
You don’t have to talk through every detail.
And you don’t have to force anything.
EMDR is paced, collaborative, and grounded in safety.
At Oak & Rose, we use EMDR as part of a trauma-informed approach — always moving at a pace that feels manageable and respectful of your nervous system.
If you’re feeling stuck in something that won’t shift, EMDR can be a powerful way to support healing.

So many people I work with carry an inner voice that feels harsh, relentless, and convincing. And often, it started as a way to cope.

In therapy, we don’t just try to “get rid” of that voice—we begin to understand it, soften it, and create space for something different.

If this resonates, you’re not alone.
And you don’t have to keep relating to yourself this way.

Call it controversial, but healing isn’t about becoming smaller, calmer, or easier to digest.

It’s about becoming
🌹More honest in your body.
🌹More resourced.
🌹More able to stay with yourself—even when it’s hard.

And sometimes that means questioning not just your thoughts…
but the systems that taught you how to relate to yourself in the first place. And choosing how you want to keep going forward.

🌻🌻🌻

Your reflection is not a report card.
It’s not a measure of your worth, your discipline, or your enoughness.

Some days, the mirror feels loud—
highlighting everything you’ve been taught to critique.

But what if, instead of fixing your body,
you softened your gaze?

What if you met yourself with the same warmth
you offer everyone else?

Healing body image isn’t about loving what you see every day— it’s about changing the relationship you have with the one who’s looking.

You deserve to feel at home in your body. 🤍

______________________________________________

🌻🌻🌻

Feeling overwhelmed or anxious? Try Box Breathing.

Box breathing is a simple, science-backed technique that helps calm your nervous system and bring you back to the present moment.

Think of it like drawing a box with your breath:

⬛ Inhale for 4 seconds
⬛ Hold for 4 seconds
⬛ Exhale for 4 seconds
⬛ Hold for 4 seconds

Repeat for a few minutes.

This pattern helps regulate your body’s stress response by activating the parasympathetic nervous system—your body’s natural “calm down” mode.

✨ When to use it:
• During anxiety or panic
• Before a stressful conversation
• To wind down before sleep
• Anytime you feel “activated”

💡 Tip: Visualize tracing a square or spell your name—one letter per side—to stay focused.

Small breath. Big shift.

What if we changed our language? Would that reduce the shame and stigma people feel about seeking help and support?

What if we softened the language we use for mental health?

Instead of seeing people as “disordered,”
what if we saw adaptive responses shaped by experience?

✨ Mood response
✨ Anxiety response
✨ Post Traumatic Stress Response
✨ Eating (restrictive/binge/purge) response
✨ Borderline Personality response
✨ Obsessive-compulsive response
✨ Substance-use response

When we shift the lens from what’s wrong with you
to what happened to you and how did you learn to cope—
something powerful changes.

We move from shame → understanding
From pathology → compassion
From fixing → supporting

At Oak & Rose Counselling, we honour that many symptoms are not flaws…
they are intelligent adaptations of the nervous system.

Does this perspective change how you view yourself—or someone you love?

Grounded in trauma-informed frameworks and the science of the nervous system, including Polyvagal Theory developed by Stephen Porges.

The Quiet Burnout Test

Not the full on burnout, which can happen very easily in our society today...
The kind people carry quietly.

Take a moment and ask yourself:

• Do I feel responsible for everything and everyone?
• Do I keep pushing even when I'm exhausted?
• Do I struggle to feel satisfied even when things go well?
• Do I feel guilty resting?
• Do I look “fine” on the outside but overwhelmed inside?

If you answered yes to more than two, your nervous system might be asking for support.

You are not failing.
You are likely carrying too much, for too long, without enough care directed toward you.

At Oak & Rose Counselling, we work with women who appear strong on the outside but feel depleted inside — navigating anxiety, chronic stress, trauma/PTSD, relationships, and disordered eating/body image.

Quiet burnout deserves attention too.

Quick Mental Health Skill 🌿 Cognitive Defusion

When a difficult thought shows up, try this simple exercise:

Take the thought and sing it in your mind to the tune of “Happy Birthday.”

For example, if the thought is:
“I’m going to mess this up.”

Sing it in your head like:
🎵 “I’m going to mess this up… I’m going to mess this up…”

It may feel a little silly — and that’s the point.

This technique helps your brain step back and see the thought as just a thought, not a fact or prediction.

When we loosen our grip on thoughts, they often lose their power.

At Oak & Rose, we teach practical skills that help people respond to their thoughts with more flexibility and self-compassion.

Save this for the next time your mind gets stuck on repeat. 🌿
