We're celebrating our friend and long-time supporter, Jodi Afonso!

Jodi is no stranger to the Foundation; if anything, she's one of us. We're thrilled to share that her Pocket Hugs are now available at the newly launched Station Market at the Thunder Bay marina.

Each Pocket Hug is a tiny keepsake with a big purpose, offering comfort, connection, and care to whoever carries it. Best of all, a portion of proceeds from Pocket Hug sales supports local cancer care right here in Thunder Bay through our Northern Cancer Fund! It's a beautiful mission powered by love, one hug at a time.

Stop by Station Market to grab a Pocket Hug for yourself, a friend, or someone who needs a little extra courage today. 💜

Thanks to your donations & 50/50 support, the Hospital's new vascular access ultrasound makes IVs, PICC lines, and other insertions faster, safer, and far less painful - especially for patients with hard-to-find veins.

"It does wear on people - those repeated pokes," Justin Ross, Vascular Access Clinical Nurse Specialist said. "In all my years of nursing, I've never gotten appreciation like I do using VA ultrasound." ❤️

For cancer patients, children, and anyone who's faced multiple pokes, this technology is truly life-changing.

Your donations and support provide relief for patients like these every single day. Thank you!

What began as a fun twist on the Thunder Bay 50/50 August ‘Dog Days of Summer’ campaign turned into something truly special thanks to a collaboration with the Thunder Bay & District Humane Society!🥹

Alongside more than 1,000 pet photo submissions from animal lovers across Ontario, the Hospital Foundation teamed up with the Humane Society to help shine a light on pets looking for their forever homes. Throughout August, adoptable dogs and cats were featured across the Foundation’s platforms, helping them get seen, shared, and, hopefully adopted.

And it worked! By the end of the month, 13 dogs and 31 cats had found their forever homes. In addition, 6 more dogs are currently on adoption trials, and 12 more cats and dogs are in Foster to Adopt Homes.

“This year’s Dog Days of Summer gave us the chance to do something new,” says Glenn Craig, Hospital Foundation CEO. “Teaming up with the Humane Society meant we could celebrate the pets people already love, while also helping more animals find homes of their own.

Our team enjoyed sharing the photos and following the adoptions, and it was incredible to see so many people get involved. We’re proud to have used our platform to support another organization doing such important work.”

For the Humane Society, the impact was just as powerful.

“So often, all it takes is the right person seeing the right animal at the right time,” says Stephanie Folino of the Thunder Bay & District Humane Society. “Having the Foundation share our adoptable pets on their platforms gave them that chance, and the response was incredible. It was moving to see so many pets find homes. It really showed us the power of sharing — when more eyes are on these animals, more of them can hopefully find the families they’ve been waiting for.”

Thanks to the generosity of Prostate Cancer Support Thunder Bay, we are able to DO MORE for prostate cancer diagnosis in Northwestern Ontario.

Every day 63 men in Canada are diagnosed with prostate cancer. If detected early the survival rate is close to 100%, which is why it is important to get tested.

On Tuesday, September 2nd, the Prostate Cancer Support Group Thunder Bay proudly raised the flag to officially proclaim September as Prostate Cancer Awareness Month in Thunder Bay.

If you missed this impactful moment, they will be hosting the Annual Prostate Cancer Health Fair on September 7, 2025. It will be held in the main auditorium at the Thunder Bay 55 Plus Centre between 10am and 4:30pm. You can hear speakers, see health professionals, and get a free PSA test provided by Life Labs.

To learn more about early detection and if you are at high-risk visit www.prostatecancersupporttbay.org
