“Discipline will bring you further than motivation ever will”

This was a quote I heard recently that really resonated with me. I think we have all had that moment where we were so motivated to accomplish something and you start out strong, but every passing day that motivation fades until you quit. Self discipline will keep you working to reach your goal even on the days you don’t want to.
For the month of January, Michelle and I made a goal that would get mundane quickly, so we knew we would have to be disciplined and consistent. We decided we would perform 1 Murph workout together (each person - 50 pull ups, 100 push ups, 150 squats, 1 mile run) every day for the whole month. We started out excited but after the first week we were already bored. We were not motivated at all after the first few days but we stayed consistent and reached our goal.
You can do this with any goal whether it’s reading a book, a mental health goal, physical health, financial, or anything else. Pick something manageable and specific with a time line. If you can find a partner to do it with, that always helps too!

“I exercise but I avoid squatting and deadlifting because it’s bad for my back”

I hear this almost daily from people who have had an experience with back pain and then have stopped deadlifting and squatting for years because they are worried they will re-injure their backs.
Squatting and deadlifting are a part of our lives and the older we get the more important it is to continue to train these movements.
Whether it is getting up from a chair, picking up your child, bringing the groceries into the house, or cleaning the bathtub we perform these movements daily. If we can build strength and confidence through the movements by training for them, it will transfer over to real life application. That being said, start slow and lift with intent. Build confidence in your movements and in yourself. If you need further advice, assistance, or help getting started, feel free to schedule an appointment at Baldwin Street Chiropractic!

PLANTAR FASCIITIS! 🦶🦶🏃‍♀️🏃‍♂️

One of the most common foot diagnoses, and a large pain in the 'heel'

Most commonly presents with an intense pain at the base of the heel first thing in the morning or with repetitive activity.
It is thought to have developed from decreased blood flow, hyperpronation or supination, tight calf complex, and/or repetitive activity that stresses the lower leg/foot.

Some tips if you are currently dealing with plantar fasciitis.
- Reevaluate your shoe choice, find a show with a wide toe box that allows your toes to be spread apart and not be crunched together.
- As soon as you wake up; grab your big toe and pull it towards your shin. Hold for 3 seconds and repeat.
- Freeze a water bottle and roll your foot over the bottle for a soothing feeling.
- Stretch your gastrocnemius and soleus with the two motions above.
- Start to strengthen the foot and the lower leg once your initial symptoms start to fade.
See videos above for demonstrations.

If you need extra help or guidance, we can work together in office to develop a plan that fits your lifestyle, as well as apply additional techniques; such as myofascial release techniques, adjusting, and more to get you back on track.

COVID-19 and physical activity! 💪🫁🫀🏃‍♂️

A new study published by BJSM found that being consistently inactive for 2 years leading up to the pandemic increased risk of severe illness. It also found that physical activity was one of the largest predictors of illness severity.

WHO guidelines suggests to achieve 150 minutes of moderate/vigorous activity per week. Even if you aren’t reaching 150 minutes/week it has been found that some exercise is always better than none when it comes to mental and physical health as well as covid-19 severity.

Of course this is always a number to strive for, but if you’ve noticed that you haven’t been as active as you would like to be or you used to be; something is always better than nothing! With that being said do your best to get some movement in today!

Not all physical activity has to be organized sports, lifting weights, or going for a run. A walk through the park, gardening, or trying to do some sit to stands in between tv commercials are all good activities.

If you need any help don’t hesitate to reach out!

What is chiropractic?

For those of you who don’t know what chiropractic is or what chiropractors do, this is for you!

• Chiropractors are health care professionals that focus on the musculoskeletal and nervous system.

• We can help with a multitude of injuries such as back pain, neck pain, headaches, sprains/strains and much more.

• The chiropractic approach is a conservative and hands-on method that includes a patient exam, education, and treatment.

• We use many different techniques to help you feel better but every case will differ depending on your individual needs and complexity.

• Some of the treatments may include adjustments; which is where we use our hands to put a safe and controlled force into a joint to help increase range of motion and function. We also use other modalities such as cupping and scraping techniques, MRT, rehabilitative exercises, ergonomic recommendation, and nutritional / lifestyle guidance to help you get back to feeling like yourself.

• If we think that you will be better suited by another healthcare professional we will make the recommendation for you.
