Mindful Walking in Nature
If you want to re-energize yourself and do some mindful meditation, you might like mindful walking in a natural outdoor setting.

This is a special way of practising meditation especially for those who find they are restless when sitting in meditation.
How? Simply pay attention to your steps as you walk feeling your feet on the ground and noticing your breath. Generally you would walk slower than usual but you can experiment with the speed. Enjoy!

From time to time it is good to stop and pause, look around and really notice what you see, hear, feel and even touch. Notice if you have thoughts, physical sensations and feelings in the body as you pause. Allow what is and let things be or drift off like clouds in the sky.

You may send warm well wishes to anyone you see on your walk. It can be an internal well wish like "May you be happy." "May you be well." Even a smile or a verbal warm hello works too.

Continue with your mindful slow walking noticing what you can tune into. After 20 minutes or so you can conclude the walk with gratitude for this meditation and you can intend that the meditation be of benefit to all sentient beings.

Wishing you happiness, wellness and peace. Shanti. Shanti. Shanti.

Awareness
Recently I heard Jon Kabat-Zinn, Mindfulness teacher, speak about meditation and awareness. He said: Meditation is a radical act of love, a radical act of sanity... and he urged: "Let's inhabit awareness as we live this moment with compassion and kindness.... Let's sing and dance along the way."

We have many moments in a day. We just need to bring awareness, presence into the moments to feel more alive, fresh and kind.

Wishing you the joy of the wondrous moments. Shanti. Shanti. Shanti.

Spring is Around the Corner
Walking through the garden the other day, I noticed some purple crocuses have popped up and I could see the green foliage of tulips and daffodils. Even though we had some snow and colder temperatures, Spring officially starts this week on March 20th.

Green is the colour of Spring which represents freshness, vitality and growth. If you want to really relax, spend time among trees. Their green aliveness has been proven to relax the body/mind/spirit.

Those of us who have plants in our home can attest to the difference they make to us. They bring beauty and help us to connect to the quality of aliveness and interconnectedness of all living beings.

When meditating it is helpful to sit, lie or stand near a plant or flowers as their green energy provides a healthy and positive vibration for mindfulness.

This week notice how you feel when you are outside near green trees or even when wearing the colour green -- maybe on St. Patrick's Day on March 17th.

Wishing you wellness and ease. Shanti. Shanti. Shanti.

Practice Patience
In our daily lives there are many moments when we can choose between patience and impatience. Patience is regarded in Buddhist circles as one of the Six Perfections to gaining enlightenment.

How do we respond when we are in a long line up at the grocery store and the clerk leaves to attend to something else which means we wait longer? How do we react when we are ill or in pain for an extended period of time - wanting desperately to feel well again?

Patience occurs in nature too. The flower can not emerge until the timing is right. So too for us when we get impatient with our personal and spiritual growth.

With patience we can connect to the warmth of our heart and connect to love and compassion for ourselves and others.

This week be mindful when you are impatient and patient and notice how it feels in the body and mind. As well, notice how it feels to connect to love and compassion. Give yourself kindness.

Wishing you patience and harmony. Shanti. Shanti. Shanti.

Peace and Harmony
"Affirm divine calmness and peace, and send out only thoughts of love and goodwill if you want to live in peace and harmony." Paramahansa Yogananda Yogi & spiritual teacher.

The Buddha also taught that we need to nurture the seeds of goodness to lead a life of happiness and peace. But sometimes, we find situations that lead to natural and difficult emotions arising where we feel anger, fear, hurt and deep sadness. What to do?

We need to train ourselves to breathe and help the mind and the body to find calmness and some peace without reacting. We need this spaciousness or time to allow our nervous and hormonal systems to calm down. We might even go for a walk.

Then we may find the peace, wisdom and harmony to deal with the disruption.

We can also practice Metta meditation to nurture our ability to feel love and compassion for ourselves and others. Remember the feeling of peace and harmony and help yourself to re-create it.

Wishing you peace. Shanti. Shanti. Shanti.

Connect with Nature
When we mindfully connect with nature, we deepen our spirituality. We feel the enormity of the beauty that lies before us and that sparks the opening of our own inner light and beauty.

If snowy days keep you inside, you can still immerse yourself in nature through indoor plants and flowers and even enjoying the spectacle of fresh fallen snow on trees and bushes.

When we connect with nature, we truly connect with our inner depth and this is an act of self-love.

Wishing you happiness, love and wellness. Shanti. Shanti. Shanti.

40 Days of Lent
Ash Wednesday is the beginning of Lent that culminates with the celebration of Easter. You may wish to mark this special time with meditation, prayer, journalling, self-reflection and charitable giving.

All of these endeavours can help us to grow spiritually and to find more purpose in our life.

Wishing you mindful moments. Shanti. Ahanti. Shanti,

Balance
How is your balance right now? I'm talking about your sense of groundedness - really being steady and strong. I'm also referring to being balanced emotionally, mentally and spiritually.

"If you balance in the Present, you are living in Eternity." BKS Iyengar, Yoga guru.

So this week notice if you feel balanced. Do a tree pose or a mountain pose and feel that strength and energy as you balance. Notice in the present how you feel and how you are thinking. Give yourself kindness and self-compassion too.

Wishing you wellness and peace. Shanti. Shanti. Shanti.

Frosty Tree on Ground Hog Day
I woke up this morning to icy frost on the trees in our backyard, so it looks like more days of winter to come! Well, some of the ground hog forecastors are saying 6 more weeks and at least one other is saying an early Spring. At any rate, if we are mindful, we can stay more present-centered and see what is before us right now in this moment.

There is beauty to be had in the ice decorating the trees. And, if we check in with ourselves, we may notice many gratitudes. Everything from in this moment we are feeling ok and maybe even very good. We might have good energy and vitality in this very moment or if not this moment then the next. We just need to pay more attention throughout the day.

Wishing you wellness, happiness and peace. Shanti. Shanti. Shanti.

Mindfulness of the Body
Jack Kornfield wrote in his "Buddha's Little Instruction Book" that "Our body is precious. It is our vehicle for awakening. Treat it with care."

When we attend to the sensations in the body whether sitting, standing, walking or lying, we gain valuable information and awareness.

When you breathe in and out notice: is your breath agitated or calm? When we scan through our body what do we experience? Perhaps we notice cold, hot, areas of tension or pain or maybe a feeling of strength and vitality. We may have a physical sense of peace and more.

We may notice that the sensations come and go, they are not permanent.

So this week, notice the actual physical sensations in your body, when walking or doing some other form of movement. Notice what you sense when you are sitting at your desk or elsewhere. If you find tension, breathe into the area softness and pure white light. Breathe out the stale, the tight as you relax. Notice how you feel and what you discover.

Wishing you ease and peace. Shanti. Shanti. Shanti.

Calm the Mind and the Emotions
By paying attention to our breath, we can calm the mind and the emotions to find deep relaxation with stillness. When we continue this practice of following the in and out breath day after day healing can happen.

"When the breath wanders, the mind is also unsteady. But when the breath is calmed, the mind too will be still, and the yogi achieves long life. Therefore, one should learn to control the breath." (Hatha Yoga Pradipka - Mid 14th Century).

So, this week practice meditating with the breath - feeling the in breath and the out breath and when your mind, body or emotions take you away, note this and let this go as you return to the calmness of breathing - natural breathing.

Wishing all of you love, peace, harmony and wellness. Wishing those who have recently lost loved ones the support and love of friends and family. Wishing peace for all sentient beings. Shanti. Shanti. Shanti.

Bring More Light In
When the weather outside is 'frightful', you can always stay inside where the 'fire is so delightful...' (Song 'Let It Snow, Let It Snow'). We have had snow, rain, freezing rain and cold so far this Winter and by now some of us are ready for more light and sun.

To bring more light into our lives we can turn on a Himalayan salt lamp and enjoy its warm glow and negative ions. It helps us feel more relaxed and calm.

Of course, we can also do a healing meditation with pure white light descending from the crown and flowing through the body to the soles of our feet. This can lighten and brighten our mood and help us to find our own inner pure light.

Wishing you all the joy of a beautiful morning sunrise and the joy of watching a tiny chick-a-dee as it captures a seed and then flits quickly to a higher spot to eat the seed.

May you take the time to connect with friends and family even briefly letting them know how much you care about them. And, may your inner light expand and shine out to others.

Shanti. Shanti. Shanti. Peace to all beings everywhere. Peace to those who have recently departed the earth realm, especially Kim who was a light to many.
