🍱 FALLS PREVENTION 🍲 our topic this week is nutrition! What we eat is key to our overall health and well-being and plays a big part in fall prevention. Canada‘s Food Guide is a great resource to learn about recommendations for senior adults. We want to prioritize fruits and vegetables, whole-grain carbohydrates, and proteins from animal and plant based sources. Why don’t you share your favourite healthy snack in the comments below?

👀 FALLS PREVENTION 👀 this week we are discussing vision. Our vision changes as we get older, and this increases our risk of falls. You may find it more difficult to perceive depth, more difficult to focus. Your eyes might have trouble adjusting from light to dark or you might find your eyes are more sensitive to bright lights. It is important to see your optometrist annually or any time you notice a change in vision. It’s also important to wear your glasses correctly and to keep them nice and clean! You can eat a diet rich in vitamin A and E (eat your carrots!) In your home, consider adding extra lighting, taking your time as you travel up and downstairs and perhaps mark the edge of stairs with contrasting tape.

💊 FALLS PREVENTION 💊 Medication is our theme this week. Medications can increase a risk of fall due to side effects and interactions between different medicines. It is important to review all of your medications at least annually or any time you add a new medication or change medications. You will want to ask your doctor or pharmacist questions regarding how to take your medication what to do if you miss a dose and any possible side effects you might experience. Remember that the most important thing is to take any medication you’ve been prescribed! Being aware of potential side effects is important but there is no need for fear 💙
