About John:

John Scaplen MScPT, CMT, Dip. MDT

John was born and raised in St. John’s. He completed a Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Geophysics at Memorial University in 2005 and, after 4 years in the Oil and Gas sector, decided to change careers and completed the Masters of Science in Physiotherapy program at Dalhousie University in 2012.

John’s early Physiotherapy career was spent in Calgary, Alberta affording him the opportunity to access substantial continuing education in movement impairment syndromes, spinal manipulation and advanced course work in upper and lower extremities.

John is most passionate about The McKenzie Method of Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy (MDT). This well-researched method consists primarily of targeted education, exercise and manual therapy with a focus on patient empowerment leading to improved long-term outcomes. John completed a MDT residency in Austin, Texas making him the only practitioner in the province to hold a Diploma in MDT. John has shared his skills and passion for this method of treating spine and extremity conditions with other Physiotherapists and Chiropractors in both Canada and the United States as an assistant instructor for many MDT courses.

Most recently, John has been a guest lecturer at both the Dalhousie University School of Physiotherapy and Memorial University Faculty of Medicine as well as being a special guest on the Health and Wellness Radio Show on VOCM.

John spends much of his free time outdoors golfing, hiking or mountain biking. He is also an avid photographer, pool player and musician (guitarist/vocalist).
