At our last newborn care class, a thoughtful new parent asked
“What newborn recommendations have changed over the years? And how do we know what’s being recommended today won’t be considered unsafe later?”
Such an important question !
Parenting advice has absolutely evolved over the decades. As research improves and we learn more about infant development, sleep physiology, feeding, and safety, recommendations shift. That doesn’t mean previous parents were careless. It means we continue to grow in our understanding !
That curiosity inspired us to head to e-bay and order these vintage prenatal and infant care books.
We’ll be sharing excerpts in our newborn care classes so families can see just how much has changed and why !
Some examples of changes over time include
Sleep spaces once filled with pillows, bumpers, and toys are now recommended to be clear and firm
Car seat standards and positioning guidelines
Hospital nursery practices and rooming in.
Strict feeding schedules versus responsive on -demand feeding
Evolving conversations around sleep training .
Nipple shapes and bottle design
Strong recommendations for room sharing in the early months to reduce SIDS risk 🤍
While guidance evolves, some principles remain steady. We prioritize what is strongly evidence based and safety focused, such as safe sleep and SIDS prevention guidelines. From there, we help families make informed decisions that align with their values, culture, and lifestyle.
The goal is not perfection. It’s informed, supported, responsive parenting !
We look forward to seeing you at our next class 🤎
