PREVIEW: Maple Leafs vs Avalanche

By Nina Kersnik
Spanglish World Networks, Spanglish Sports World, La Ronda del Dia, H.E.R. Network, La Portada Canada

TORONTO. - The Toronto Maple Leafs (22-15-7, 5th Atlantic) open a four-game road trip with a major test against the Colorado Avalanche (33-4-7, 1st Central) at Ball Arena on Monday night.
The Leafs, who are riding on a three-game win streak, will have their work cut out for them if they’d like to keep it alive against the top-ranked team in the league.

The Avalanche have been dominant at home this season, remaining undefeated at home with a 19-0-2 record, while the Leafs have proven to struggle with more losses than wins on the road (6-10-2).

Historically, Colorado has dictated the matchups in this series, with tight advantages at Ball Arena, but they will be tested for the first time this season by the Buds strong offence.

The last time Toronto won against the Avalanche at Ball Arena was on Feb. 24, 2023.

By the numbers

William Nylander leads the Leafs with 44 points overall, 15 goals and 29 assists. John Tavares, who’s close behind with 40, leads the team with 16 goals. Toronto’s captain Auston Matthews has also stepped up in recent battles, adding seven goals and five assists.

At Colorado’s end of the ice, Martin Necas scored 20 goals and 24 assists for the Avalanche, while Brock Nelson has collected seven of his own and eight assists in the last 10 games.

What to expect

Still, the Avalanche will remain without their captain Gabriel Landeskog for a fourth consecutive game. Landeskog suffered an upper body injury early in the second period during their game against the Florida Panthers on Jan. 4.

Even without him, their penalty kill could be their potential edge. Currently, the Avalanche’s percentage puts them at the top of the stat category with 85.6 per cent, slightly outdoing Toronto’s 85.3 per cent.

But their power play percentage placing them at 26th in the league is something they need to improve. One possible solution to move up could be to take more risks around the net and make less predictable puck movement.

So, if Toronto hopes to get off to a good start and leave Denver with a win, they need to start out fast, with clean puck possession to dictate the tempo to offset Colorado’s efficiency on the ice.

Leafs inch closer to Wild Card spot, with commanding victory over Canucks

TORONTO.- The Toronto Maple Leafs continued their path in what has been a rocky campaign with a big win against the Vancouver Canucks for the first time this season in Scotiabank Arena.
The Maple Leafs who are on a two-game win streak, hold a 21-15-7 record and rank 6th in the Atlantic, whereas the Canucks have nosedived completely ranking last in the Pacific Division with a 16-22-5 record.

Toronto began the first red-hot, quickly slotting three goals within 20 minutes. Once by Finnish native Matias Maccelli, another by Max Domi minutes later, and the biggest goal of the night by William Nylander. Nylander entered the lineup against Vancouver after being out with a lower body injury since Dec. 27. The Swedish native scored the third goal with 19.40 left on the clock, while marking his 15th of the season.

However, the same success could not be said for the Canucks, who’ve had a season of predominant lows.

As time went on, they showcased their disjointed line up, and although they had great chances through 40 minutes, outshooting Toronto by four, they couldn’t slot a single goal within that time frame.

In addition, what had the biggest strain on their lineup was their back end, especially with the decision to place Thatcher Demko between the pipes. This season Demko has been worse off when away with a 1-4-0 record, compared to his dominant starts at home (5-0-0). The San Diego, Cal., native has also let five consistent games go by while letting in three goals or more in the first period.

What was surprising though was the fact that Demko was never switched nor pulled out completely for an extra attacker, despite letting two more go beneath him by the final buzzer.

Overall, the team’s performance flipped on its head compared to their last few seasons in Toronto, where the Canucks won four of the last five meetings in Scotiabank Arena. The last time the Leafs won a game at home against the Canucks was on Nov. 11, 2023, with a score of 5-2.

What could be the most possible and biggest change needed for Vancouver is becoming more consistent on their plays. After they went down by three goals it was evident that they almost immediately discarded their desire to get back in the game.

This error translated to their puck handling becoming significantly sloppier and their physicality weakening, which overall made it difficult for them to form the slightest chance of a comeback.

In the end, the Buds flipped the script with a dominant 5-0 shutout, mainly due to the confidence Nylander instilled in his team since his return. All the players in blue-and-white also put their teamwork skills on full display, resulting in a well-earned win, and a fourth career shutout for their goaltender Joseph Woll.

With the win, the Buds sit in the fourth Wild Card spot with 51 points, putting them within one of earning a playoff spot. Currently they are tied with the Pittsburgh Penguins, who sit one spot above them.

The Leafs will go on a four-game road trip before traveling back to Toronto for a battle against the Minnesota Wild on Jan. 19.

Sceptres struggling offence reoccurring roadblock for success

By Nina Kersnik
Spanglish World Network, Spanglish Sports World, H.E.R. Network, La Portada Canada

TORONTO.- Toronto has shown it has promising sequences, but its offence needs refinement.
The Toronto Sceptres were off to a disappointing start to the new calendar year after falling to the red-hot New York Sirens at home on Tuesday.

It was a scrappy start to the first, with back and forth play as the Sirens disrupted any amount of momentum made by the Sceptres.

Toronto, who is currently ranked fourth in the league, holds a 4-0-3-4 record and were the better team on the score sheet. However, New York, who are second in the standings, hold a 6-0-0-5 record and proved to be more efficient on the ice. This was mainly due to the way they played on their offensive end, something Toronto hasn’t seen in their gameplay for quite some time now.

It was especially evident in this match against their biggest rivals, where despite the great chances made up front the Sceptres would lose the disc more often than making a clean shot.

In the second period, time dripped away as inconsistent passes, turnovers, and a lack of physicality compared to New York resulted in errors and a goal by Sirens’ rookie Krystina Kaltuonkova just shy of three minutes in. Then to clean it up quickly an empty net gave them another making it 2-0 by the end of regulation.

With the loss, this is the first time the Sirens have won a game at the Coca-Cola Coliseum against the Sceptres since the PWHL began three seasons ago.

As well, these same struggles were also on display one week ago, in a matchup against the two-time Walter Cup Champions the Minnesota Frost in their 5-1 loss on home ice.

In their second match against each other in the regular season, the Sceptres made themselves known by netting an early goal made by Toronto’s leading goal scorer Daryl Watts. Watts, who leads the Sceptres with eight points in 10 games, holds double the points than all Toronto’s rookies combined.

Afterward their lack of rhythm in the offensive end allowed the Frost to take control quickly eventually scoring five of their own in the end, showing there’s a tendency for the team to rely on individuals for the points rather than a win resulting in a collective effort.

Similarly, in a Christmas Eve matchup against the Ottawa Charge, they built a solid start and a good momentum with a 3-0 lead until the end of regulation. Despite their effort to remain ahead, they let their grip loosen a bit on their structure, resulting in the Charge, who were and still are placed dead last in the league, to take the game for themselves, 4-3.

Moving forward, a possible solution could be to really work on their structure of play but most of all to make sure there is support is there before sending the puck in for a scoring chance.

The next game for the blue and gold is in Lowell, Mass., against the Fleet (6-0-1-2, 1st PWHL) on Jan. 14 before returning to Toronto on Jan. 17.

✨💙 Extreme thinness is making a comeback… and we need to talk about it

Across social media and pop culture, extreme thinness is trending again, sending a harmful message about what the “ideal body” should be. ⚠️📸

This pressure doesn’t come from women, it comes from a system that decides which bodies are shown and celebrated.
