While your Nutrigenomics report gives you insights and recommendations around your nutrient intake and physical activity, my comprehensive workbook, reviewed by University of Toronto faculty of Nutritional Sciences & Precision Nutrition, helps to integrate those changes in your daily life in easy, simple ways. It contains tools to help you establish healthy habits around Nutrition, physical activity, and mental wellbeing, based on the needs of your body as determined by your genetic test. First part of the workbook is highly specific to your genetic results and the 2nd part is a guide towards a healthy mindset around dietary habits, and fun activities that help you make changes into your lifestyle based on your genes.

This is not a general handout to every client. Each client's workbook is individualized and is targeted just to their needs, including insights from your nutrigenomics report.

Nutritional Sciences & Genetics can be quite complex to understand. Even more complex is to be able to word the recommendations in a way that an individual can implement in their daily life while taking into account their concerns, goals, culture, and personalities! I strive hard to make my follow-ups simple and easy to understand for my clients. Nutrigenomix Report is 29 pages long and while it's really comprehensive, it's not always easy to go back & forth with our lives being so busy! This is why I include a comprehensive yet easy to follow workbook in my gold and platinum packages, and ensure my follow-up is as simple and organized as possible!

Mindset Reframing at The Nurturing Code 🧠

Shifting focus from a Goal Checklist to a Reverse Bucket List:

Can you remember the last time you crossed a major goal off your checklist?🏄‍♂️

Do you remember fantasizing about how happy you would be if you attained those things?
If you finally did attain one of those things, how did it make you feel? How long did the feeling last?

For most of us, that “happiness boost” is short-lived and fleeting. It didn’t last that long or wasn’t as intense as you’d imagined. So, what do we do? We get right on to forming an even loftier goal, achieve it, hoping to feel that happiness boost again. And again, until we are stuck in a cycle of chasing a feeling that was not meant to last.

This phenomenon is called Hedonic Adaptation in Human Biology. Every time we experience an emotion or a feeling, whether its negative or positive, within the first six seconds, every cell in our body responds to it, before we return to our baseline level again.

Now, don’t get me wrong. Being goal-oriented can be powerful, it keeps us driven, motivated, and can help to inspire others. But next time, you are on your way to forming and achieving a goal, I want you to pause and reflect on what are you chasing? Are you chasing a feeling of achievement or success that was never meant for human bodies and was never intended to last. What is it adding to your overall purpose? And what impact is YOUR goal having on the people around you.

Remember, you have an entire life to live outside of your goals. So, I am proposing something different than a goal checklist. I want you to try a Reverse bucket list. The concept is that instead of adding things onto your checklist, a longer sense of happiness can be achieved by SUBTRACTING things/tasks that drain our energy.

Today on Science Sunday, I talk about the risk of vitamin B12 deficiency in those on plant-based diets exclusively. This is further complicated by the roles our genetics play in its metabolism.

Those on plant-based diets are at increased risk of being deficient in Vitamin B12. It is very important for a healthy brain and normal nervous system functioning and is primarily found in meat, eggs, and dairy products. This is where supplementation can be necessary in those eating plant-based foods mainly.

How do we know some individuals are at higher risk of vitamin B12 deficiency: A gene called FUT2 Gene determines how efficiently an individual utilizes Vitamin B12.

Those who are on a vegetarian diet are at risk of low serum B12 if they carry the GG or GA version of the FUT2 gene vs those who carry the AA version. Meanwhile individuals with the AA genotype have comparable levels of b12 regardless of if they were following an animal based or a plant-based vegetarian diet. So it is essential for those who are on a plant-based diet AND have the high risk genotype to meet the RDA for vitamin b12, which is 2.4 micrograms daily.

Here are some research-based Friday Facts during the plant-based foods week at The Nurturing Code. When we think of a risk for heart disease, most of us associate it mostly with an increasing age. Throughout my clinical experience working in cardiac health, a LOT of my patients were in fact, not older, but middle-aged adults.

A recent study from the American Heart Association found that eating a plant-based diet during young adulthood is associated with a lower risk of heart disease during middle age. These results come after a long-term study with over thirty years of follow-up.

Research showed that those who ate the most nutritionally rich plant foods and fewer adversely rated animal products – were 52% less likely to develop cardiovascular disease.
