Cancer during adolescence and young adulthood presents unique challenges.

During Adolescent and Young Adult (AYA) Awareness Week (April 6-10) we recognize the unique needs and challenges faced by young individuals who are diagnosed with cancer.

At UHN’s Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, the AYA Oncology Program supports patients ages 15 to 39 through care that includes music therapy, which has a profound impact on patients during their hospital stay.

Watch Tiffany, an AYA patient at UHN’s Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, provide a special musical performance in collaboration with Music in the Atrium.

Happy Oncology Nursing Day!

Today, we’re celebrating the incredible oncology nurses at UHN like Kezia, who works in the Thoracic/Sarcoma Ambulatory Clinics at UHN’s Princess Margaret Cancer Centre. She supports patients through chemotherapy assessments and ongoing monitoring throughout treatment.

“I like my role because I get to know my patients for several years sometimes. The ability to follow my patients throughout their journey is so rewarding.”

Thank you Kezia, and all oncology nurses at UHN, for the vital impact you have on countless individuals undergoing life-saving cancer treatments.

Celebrated on the first Tuesday of April, National Caregiver Day is an opportunity to recognize and honour the invaluable contributions of caregivers who provide unpaid support to their relatives, partners, friends or neighbours with a short or long-term health condition, physical or mental disability, or needs related to aging.

Caregivers often do not see themselves as such and believe they are just doing what needs to be done for the people in their lives.

TeamUHN sees caregivers at the bedside, attending clinic appointments, and supporting patients at every step of their health care journey. Caregivers are important members of a patient's care team whose presence improves quality of care, patient outcomes, patient safety, and patient experience.

Today, on Green Shirt Day, we wear green to bring awareness for organ and tissue donation. Currently, about 1,400 people in Ontario are waiting for a life-saving organ transplant.

Follow along with Ajmera Transplant Centre at UHN to meet some of the dedicated staff operating Canada’s largest and most prolific transplant program, and the significant impact that registering to donate can have.

Meet our Ward Clerks on 6A and 7AB

Ward clerks are often the first people to be seen on the Transplant Units. They have a critical role in facilitating the smooth running of the inpatient units, including chart management, admission, discharge and transfer, answer phones, call bells and in person questions. This trusted team quietly keep things moving and flowing on the unit.

What better way to celebrate the end of your rehab journey than with a Zumba class? 🕺💃

TeamUHN Physiotherapist Kajal Neto noticed how much one of her patients loved to dance. They worked to incorporate it into their sessions, making them more personalized, fun and engaging. When the patient wanted to celebrate their milestone moment with a dance party, Kajal enthusiastically agreed. The patient put up handmade posters and invited others to join in the fun.

"We were amazed at how quickly she started to make improvements in her balance and endurance," Kajal noted about their daily progress. "It was such a fun way for patients and staff to meet, laugh at our silly dance moves, and build more community in the rehab setting."

Kajal was joined by Hannah, occupational therapist, and Caitlyn, occupational therapist and physiotherapist assistant, who demonstrated adapted versions of the steps to ensure that everyone could participate.

Thank you to the team at TR-UC 8 South, who go above and beyond to help patients with movement and milestones!

Registered Dietitians are essential members of the healthcare team at UHN – supporting patients in ways that go far beyond common perceptions.

This Nutrition Month, we’re taking a closer look at how dietitians support patient care every day – in clinical settings and behind the scenes.

Across UHN, dietitians provide specialized clinical nutrition therapy, personalized and practical counselling, and leadership in hospital food operations. Together, this work supports patients through the safe delivery of therapeutic meals that promote healthier habits and improved health outcomes.

Swipe to challenge common assumptions and learn more about the work of Registered Dietitians at UHN.

Happy Pharmacy Appreciation Month!

Meet Marisa, a Pharmacy Clinician Scientist at UHN. Her journey at UHN began 27 years ago as an inpatient pharmacist in cardiology and internal medicine. Now, Marisa works in the hemodialysis unit where she reviews medications, collaborates with the nephrology team during medical rounds, and ensures external care providers receive up-to-date information. She is also a researcher and provides mentorship to students during clinical practice.

"I became a pharmacist because I like science and problem solving. But more importantly, I really enjoy working with patients," says Marisa. "I think patients like to feel heard and have someone to chat with – it’s important that we take the time to listen and try to help with what’s important to them."

Thank you, Marisa, for all you do to support patients and care teams every day.

Have you noticed something new on the rise at Bathurst and Nassau in Toronto’s west end? 👀

Crews at UHN’s new surgical tower at Toronto Western Hospital have completed the framework of the 5th floor, where neurosurgeons will perform complex brain surgeries. Work is now beginning on the 6th floor, a new base for orthopedic, plastic and hand surgeries.

In total, the 15-storey tower will house 20 advanced operating rooms, each equipped with state-of-the-art technologies to perform life-saving surgeries.

Stay up to date about the project that will advance surgical care at uhnsurgicaltower.ca
