Today, on National Orthotics and Prosthetics Day, we celebrate professionals like Lauren, whose life-changing work transforms challenges into possibilities. 🦿🦾

Lauren Pedersen blends science, carpentry and psychology in her work as a certified prosthetist. At her workbench inside UHN's West Park Healthcare Centre, she creates custom devices for individuals living with limb loss and complex physical needs. Each cast, build and adjustment for a custom prosthetic helps her patients find comfort, improve mobility and achieve their goals.

"I enjoy those first steps," Lauren says, sharing in their joy and progress. "I enjoy seeing the family's excitement and the patient's pride when they've worked really hard to get to this point and everything falls into place."

Thank you to Lauren, and to all of the TeamUHN prosthetists, orthotists, and technicians at West Park and Altum Health!

A few words of appreciation can go a long way, especially on the tougher days. That’s why we asked a few members of TeamUHN to read some thankful messages that we received from real patients.

With UHN’s Week of Gratitude starting on September 22, we’re asking patients, families, staff and colleagues so show their appreciation for the compassionate, dedicated and amazing individuals that make up TeamUHN and contribute to creating A Healthier World!

📣 Share your own words of appreciation here: https://uhn.network/SayThanks

"I ain't dying."

That's what Del Taylor told his doctors when faced with the life-threatening infection that led to the loss of both of his legs.

Following his double amputation surgery, Del arrived at UHN's West Park Healthcare Centre to begin healing. Working with his physiatrist, physiotherapists, prosthetists and the entire West Park care team, Del became determined not only to walk again, but to run, thrive, and explore again.

Today, on Rehabilitation Day, we are proud to share Del's incredible story along with a new update from him and his family. We are happy to report that Del recently went on his first nature hike with his new prosthetics, and is as motivated as ever to keep moving forward. Join us in cheering Del on as he works toward his goal of returning to marathon running in the future!
