Cortisol is often misunderstood. It naturally rises throughout the day to support energy, focus, and stress adaptation when needed. However, chronic stimulation keeps cortisol elevated into the evening, making it difficult to unwind. Restorative sleep is essential for regulating cortisol rhythms and is critical for overall health.

There are many ways to take control of your cortisol, and we are here to help!

Caffeine blocks adenosine (a sleep-promoting signal), which triggers release of adrenaline and cortisol to increase alertness.

Alcohol initially sedates, but later activates the stress response as it’s metabolized, increasing cortisol and fragmenting sleep.

Sugar causes rapid blood-glucose spikes followed by drops, prompting the adrenal glands to release cortisol and adrenaline to stabilize blood sugar.

The adrenal glands are small hormone-producing glands that sit on top of the kidneys and regulate stress responses, energy levels, blood sugar, and sleep–wake rhythms through hormones like cortisol and adrenaline.

Your body is craving calm… Try to avoid these if you haven’t been sleeping well!

Having trouble sleeping? You’re not alone. Many women find that their sleep schedules are off, which may be due to hormonal changes and high cortisol levels. Speak with a knowledgeable practitioner about these challenges you may face — we’re here to help.

Nadine, BridgeHealth’s registered dietician, detailed all the inflammatory food that you should be avoiding if you want to look, feel, and be your best.
