Are you really just "being strong," or are you secretly struggling? ๐ค๐
It is so common for people to not even realize what they are truly experiencing. For many Black people, we are constantly fed the message that we just have to be strong. We take on the role of the strong friend, the strong partner, and the strong cousin. But carrying that heavy weight often masks the reality that we might actually be struggling, feeling depressed, or feeling anxious.
Instead of recognizing it as a mental health challenge, we just think we are failing. On top of dealing with the structural experiences of racism, this pressure to be strong causes us to deny the support of family and friends, and we forget to give ourselves the daily self-compassion we deeply need. It is time to drop the cape and start healing! ๐ฃ๏ธ๐ค
