Balasana, or “Child’s pose”, is often considered a grounding and restful pose. It can indeed be very helpful to calm the body and the mind for many people, but a number of factors may affect how the pose feels for someone. Some people do not feel comfortable in child’s pose, and that is ok. Maybe using a blanket under your knees, a bolster between your legs or a block to rest your forehead may help. If not, you can simply try lying on your abdomen or on your back in savasana, and focus on your breath. The important thing is choosing a position that is truly restful to you.

The Kleshas are presented in the Yoga Sutras (and in the Buddhist philosophy) as the afflictions that are the cause of our suffering. The five kleshas are avidya (ignorance), asmita (egotism or over-identifying with your ego), raga (desire, or attachment to pleasure), dvesha (aversion), and abhinivesha (attachment to life and fear of death). They bind us to the endless cycle of birth and rebirth and are an obstacle in our path to liberation. Avidya, or ignorance, is considered the basis of all other afflictions. Because we fail to understand our true spiritual identity, we identify ourselves with our body and mind, seeking pleasure through the gratification of the body and the mind. As those identities are not our true self, but only temporary, the pleasure is also temporary and limited, being ultimately a source of frustration.

Dhyana-yoga, or the yoga of meditation, is presented in the Bhagavad Gita as a next stage in the pursuit of spiritual knowledge. The renunciation of selfish desires (Karma-yoga) is a prerequisite for this practice, but the focus of Dhyana-yoga, as also presented in the Yoga Sutras, is bringing the mind into stillness. "When meditation is mastered, the mind is unwavering like the flame of a lamp in a windless place".

The Bhagavad Gita presents us with the notion of karma-yoga, where we keep performing our worldly duties while practicing detachment from the results of our actions. If we act with no selfish desire and without expectation of results, we are actually performing inaction in action. That means that no reaction is created, therefore we are liberating ourselves from the bo***ge of our actions.
Reflecting on the karma-yoga topic, I thought of how being “focused on the results” is a quality that I was always praised for, especially in the corporate world. Being able to get things done is a great asset, but the price comes with anxiety and not being able to enjoy the process. Practicing acting without attachment to the results may not be easy, but it is incredible how it can turn out to be a huge relief!

The Bhagavad Gita, along with the Yoga Sutras, is one of the two primary foundational books on Yoga. Through the dialog between Arjuna, a Prince and warrior that does not want to fight an imminent battle, and Sri Krishna, his friend and charioteer, an avatar of the supreme consciousness itself, the ancient text presents us with instructions on how we can liberate ourselves from the cycle of rebirth while still carrying on our worldly duties.

The meaning of Yoga, as defined by Patanjali in the Yoga Sutra 1.2, is the “the restriction of the movements of the mind”. The entire science of Yoga is based on this one sutra. If we can control and return our mind to its peaceful and undisturbed state, that is Yoga.

Dhyana, or Meditation, is one of the eight limbs of the Yoga Sutras. Pranayama (breathing techniques) and Asana (postures) are other two limbs that can help us achieve a meditative state.
The truth is that there is no right or wrong way of practicing meditation. The sense of piece, clarity and stillness that comes with it is what matters the most.

Hatha Yoga was created based on the principle that it is easier to balance our mind if we start with the physical body. Asanas (postures) and Pranayamas (breathing techniques) enable us to achieve physical and mental cleansing and strengthening, working on our nervous and endocrine systems.
