📣Overheard At The Clinic 📣

"I got to hit the dance floor at my son's wedding!" 🕺

Our patients dealing with neuropathy often deal with feelings of weakness, numbness or burning in the limbs, trouble balancing or constant back and neck pain.
All of that pain makes it hard to engage in the activities you used to enjoy.

Hearing our patients have found enough relief to get out and engage in the activities they had to leave behind is the highlight of our days!

If you are dealing with neuropathy or other chronic pain acupuncture can be the missing link to getting back to celebrating like the old days. 😉

TLC Medicine is here to support your health journey no matter what stage you're in!

☃ Those +10 days are gone, winter is here!

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) focuses a lot on keeping the body warm and moving so Qi (energy) can flow.
So what do you do when the environment is cold and signaling you to slow down?

🧘Focus on gentle movement

The New Year often comes with a rush into the gym. We love getting movement in, but during winter, high-intensity workouts aren't ideal.
Winter is a time to recharge... you don't have to hibernate, but finding balance between healthy movement and rest is key.

☕Reach for warming foods (and avoid cooling ones)

Winter is the time for soups, stews and broths!
But those New Years resolutions can get in the way. Many of us see January as the best time to start a diet, and it can be, but be wary of heavily restricting your diet. In winter you need hearty food to nourish your body.

Bonus: Add kidney beans, beef and dark leafy greens to your winter diet to replenish depleted energy

🫁 Engage in breath practices to slow down the mind and body.

A good introduction is to try breathing in through the nose for 4 counts, holding for 7 and breathing out through the mouth for 8.
Breath work helps calm the nervous system, relieve tension and get your Qi circulating!

🛏 Go to bed a bit earlier

Follow cues from nature and allow yourself to sleep in when you can, honouring winter as a time of rest and rebuilding.

📚 Take time to reflect

Build in quiet “inward” time for journaling to match the more reflective energy of the season.

🧣Never go outside without your hat and scarf!

In TCM, you really can “catch” a cold. As the temperature drops, your body works harder to maintain warmth in your core, reducing circulation and immune function.
And many viruses thrive in cold weather, making it easier for them to spread.

🧦 Even at home, keep your feet bundled up to conserve your body's yang (fire) energy.
Cozy socks or slippers, especially around your period, can gently ease pain and support a smoother menstrual flow.

TCM is a powerful medicine, but it only works when your condition is properly diagnosed by a qualified TCM doctor. Having a western medical diagnosis can be helpful, but its not sufficient to guide us to choose an appropriate treatment for you!

📣New on the blog📣

When blood tests are based on a generalized range (instead of looking at what's normal for your body) it's easy to miss what is going on.

Imagine spending every day running on an empty tank of gas... that's what fatigue can feel like! But many patients get dismissed by their doctors because their blood work is "normal" (enough).

At TLC Medicine we don't just look at your charts, we listen to your experience. Whether it's trying to delegate limited energy between work, home, and outings, chugging coffee to keep up or feeling that cloud of brain fog all day, we want to know how you feel.

Taking the time to hear out your concerns equips us to support your journey to feeling energized with acupuncture, Chinese herbal medicine and other integrative therapies.

💫 What to expect after your first acupuncture session?
The effects vary from person to person!

😴 Change in energy levels
If you're running on empty acupuncture can give you that moment to relax, and recognize how your body is feeling. This can wind down the stress driving you forward.
The good news is fatigue doesn't last long, and by opening up your energy pathways you'll get back to a full tank.
For some the first session provides a revitalized feeling. Slowing down, while acupuncture activates the restorative systems in your body can give you a boost of energy for the day!

😓 Emotional Release
Have you noticed how your shoulders get tense when you're stressed? Acupuncture can help release tension in areas where you hold your stress, opening the pathway for all kinds of energy to flow through... including emotions.
In fact, acupuncture can offer meaningful shifts for mental and emotional health, and for some people it may help where other approaches, including talk therapy, have not been enough.

🤕Changes in symptoms:
In the days following your first session your symptoms may feel worse. It's a scary thought, we know!
Acupuncture is looking for the root cause, instead of trying to dull the pain.
Stirring up the pain that's been silenced can mean symptoms worsening in the days following.
For others, opening up the areas where pain is held can allow energy in, reducing the severity.
Each session is working to get your body back into balance, so with time relief will come.

🫥 Nothing:
Perhaps nothing is more worry-inducing than nothing happening. But that's actually quite normal!
Acupuncture isn't built to mask your symptoms, it's slowly training your body to re-balance. Your first session often won't feel much different from the day before. With time, you'll start to notice how your symptoms aren't as present or intense.
It's like working out, one gym session won't change anything, but within a few weeks you realize how everyday tasks are easier and you feel more energetic.

Acupuncture takes time, and that's time TLC Medicine wants to spend with you!

Caregiving is a role many of us take on at some point in our lives, but few get the support they need!

Spending your day ensuring someone else is well-fed, clean, calm, safe, rested and guiding them through confusion leaves little time to take care of yourself...
So we put together some low barrier self-care tips so you can nourish your well-being:

1. Caregiving can mean running up and down the stairs 20 times, but don't let that replace movement that nourishes your body!
Our first tip is trying out Qi-Gong or Tai-Chi, the slow intentional movement can help pinpoint areas of tension and really help in grounding yourself. A short walk can also boost mood, ground your body and get you back in touch with the world outside the home.

2. Feeding someone else each day often leaves your own preferences and needs behind. Reflect on your favourite meals, or what your body needs right now.
If you can carve out the time to make your favourite meal once, try making a bigger batch and saving a few portions for later. This creates a way to care for your emotional and physical needs for weeks to come, and serves as a reminder to take care of you.

3. A lot of energy goes into caregiving, which can make any other activities feel out of reach. Whether it’s colouring, creating, watching or fixing, hobbies make our time meaningful. Returning to an old hobby, or learning a new one can help us find positive emotions, release negative ones, and share in the hobby with others.

Remembering to take care of you can be hard, that's why TLC Medicine is here to support your wellness journey.

📣New on the blog📣

January is Alzheimer's Awareness Month, which can stir up feelings of worry for the future, or for your loved ones.

Anxiety bubbles up as we try to figure out the line between forgetfulness and disorder, what the best means of prevention are, and how to get your loved ones to take action for their well being.

Alzheimer's has no known cure, so the best acts are prevention, education and slowing progression.

Traditional Chinese Medicine acts as a compliment to medical care, seeing Alzheimer's as more than just a memory problem... It's a sign of imbalance across the entire body.
By nourishing the whole system TCM can help alleviate symptoms to restore calm and focus to the brain.

Whether you are experiencing signs of Alzheimer's, or you are struggling as a caregiver, TLC Medicine is here to support your journey

Neuropathy often feels almost indescribable-
The mixture of numbness, dulled sensations, sudden sharp pains and those unending pins and needles... all together it can feel like you have no control over your legs.

That's why regaining enough sensation to feel like your body is a whole balanced system again is a progress marker we love to hear!

If you or a loved one are struggling with neuropathy, we’re here to help.
Our treatments are designed to bring back lost sensation so you can live life to the fullest.

😴 Many treatments like sleep medications leave you tired and wired, or they may knock you out, but you wake up feeling as if you didn't sleep at all.

At TLC Medicine we use acupuncture to help your body return to relaxation. Instead of suppressing symptoms, we restore the body's natural rhythms. We balance hormones and help relieve stress so you can get to bed. ✨

Whether it's difficult getting sleep during a stressful time or if you're struggling with chronic insomnia, TLC is here to support your journey to sleep!
