Meet another member of our team! Nikola began his journey at PPA as an OTA/PTA, and has recently begun working as a resident physiotherapist. He graduated with a Master of Science in Physiotherapy at Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen, Scotland. During his masters, he has completed multiple student placements in leading paediatric hospitals across Scotland. Additionally, he holds a Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Sciences from Toronto Metropolitan University, where he was also a member of the varsity men’s basketball team. Driven by his previous work with the autism community at Jake’s House, Nikola developed a deep passion for paediatric care. He is currently providing home visits, clinic sessions, and hydrotherapy sessions.

Outside of work, he enjoys basketball (currently following the NBA, WNBA & Euroleague), watching movies (everything from a serious drama to a cheesy Christmas movie), spending time outdoors, and all things DIY crafts! 🏀🎥🎨

Tasneem completed her Bachelor and Masters degrees in Physiotherapy, specializing in Neurological Conditions, from India, with her post-graduation in 2018. Her passion for paediatrics began during her internship, and since then, she has built over six years of experience working with children and infants. Tasneem has completed advanced courses in clinical decision-making, comprehensive management of children with neuromuscular disorders, and hands-on rehab in neurological conditions. Her experience spans outpatient clinics, schools for neurodiverse children, and home-based paediatric care.

Having recently moved to Canada, Tasneem is enjoying the opportunity to expand her paediatric practice here. She is inspired by the beauty of the country, which makes her spare time even more enjoyable— hiking and exploring through nature trails or trying out creative sensory activities with her child is her favorite part of the day 🌲☀️

We hope all of our PPA families have a good first day back at school!

Here are a few of our therapists favourite tips and tricks to help with this big transition:

📚If you can, try to lessen the load in the morning school rush. For example, having their bags packed and clothes laid out the night before could help everyone feel more relaxed.

📚Build in a quick movement break to your morning routine if possible. Wall pushes, jumping jacks and deep pressure cuddles are a quick and easy way to incorporate movement and also connect with your child before spending the day apart.

📚Kids are often very hungry after school. Be prepared with a snack for them to have right away. Snacks that are chewy or crunchy, such as granola bars, apples, or carrots, provide good proprioceptive (muscles and joints) feedback which can be calming and regulating to the nervous system.

📚It can be hard for kids to go back to a full day of school after summer break. Schedule in some time to decompress after a long day, such as some quiet time at home if they seem like they need a rest, or a park visit after school if they need to move their bodies.

What other tips and tricks do you use for your little ones going back to school? Let us know in the comments!

Did you know we have identical twins working at PPA? Alison (Ali) is an Occupational Therapist and Lindsey is a Physiotherapist. Can you tell them apart? 👯‍♀️

Ali received her Masters of Science in Occupational Therapy from the University of Toronto. Ali currently works at SickKids Hospital. She has also worked in the community and in school-based settings. She has experience working with both infants and children addressing developmental, fine-motor, sensory, and oral feeding challenges. Ali is always eager to increase her knowledge and skills and has completed professional development courses in feeding and swallowing, sensory integration and neuro-developmental treatment.

Lindsey received her Masters of Physical Therapy from the University of Toronto. Lindsey has extensive experience working with children of all ages in both hospital and community settings. Lindsey currently works at SickKids where her clinical focus includes neurodevelopment and neurological rehabilitation. She values ongoing professional development and has completed courses in neuro-developmental treatment and gait analysis.

Ali and Lindsey both grew up dancing competitively in a variety of styles, inspiring their passion for movement and therapy. Did you know they have co-created a therapy-based dance program designed to help children achieve functional therapeutic goals through movement—all within a fun, inclusive group setting. A new session is starting this fall!🌟 🩰
