The real-world challenge that we are addressing is, "How can resident care and the working conditions of staff be improved in long-term care homes in Ontario?" When diving deeper into this challenge question, we learned that admitting family members into long-term care is an isolating as well as a frustrating journey. To make it easier for family members that have admitted their loved ones into long-term care, we believe that the solution towards this problem is a virtual toolkit. It will serve as an educational resource for families to get more involved in long-term care. From families helping out in long-term care a connection will be fostered between families and communities, pressure will be released off of LTC Workers, issues of isolation in long-term care will also be released.

Hey everyone! We are Team K, a part of the Cross-Campus Capstone Classroom at York University.

The Cross Capstone Classroom is an initiative at York University, where York students from diverse programs, come together and work collaboratively to solve real-world challenges that have a social impact, using interdisciplinary perspectives.

The real-world challenge that we are solving is, “How can resident care and the working conditions of staff be improved in long-term care homes in Ontario?” The University Women’s Club of North York is our partner, that has proposed this challenge question, and is assisting us in tackling this project.

After diving deep into the project question, we found that admitting family members in long-term care is a frustrating and isolating process. As a result, we decided that we are going to create a virtual toolkit that will give family members that have already admitted their loved ones into long-term care educational resources to get more involved in long-term care and ease the frustration and isolation that coexists in long-term care.

We also knew that there is mostly a negative attitude towards long-term care homes in Ontario and across Canada. We wanted to create a more positive perception surrounding long-term care homes in the GTA. We hope to do this through gathering positive experiences from people that have family members present within long-term care. From doing so, the quality of life and the wellness of both residents and staff can be improved, and the satisfaction and the enjoyment of the remaining years of life, of the vulnerable population can be better.

We would love for you to be involved in our C4 journey, share any positive experiences that you may have when visiting family members in long-term care home(s) in the GTA and across Canada, through filling out the google form at the link, https://forms.gle/cADoEBsXVXGQUJ3DA.

If you have any questions, comments or concerns about our C4 project do not hesitate to contact Tammy Ly, tammyl80@my.yorku.ca
