High-rise buildings and all facilities with stairs (schools, senior care, corporate, government etc) are often designed with safety measures in place to protect staff, visitors, students, and residents during emergency situations. One such measure is the "stay put" policy, which instructs residents to remain in their units until the emergency has passed. However, for individuals with reduced mobility, this policy can be dangerous and potentially life-threatening. Recent news articles, such as this one: https://buff.ly/3JN5Nop , have highlighted the dangers posed to these individuals and the need for better solutions.

Individuals with reduced mobility may not be able to evacuate the building quickly in the event of an emergency. This can put their lives at risk, as well as the lives of others who may be tasked with assisting them.

One solution to this problem is the use of Evac+Chair - Evacuation chairs, which are designed to transport individuals with reduced mobility, including those who use wheelchairs, down stairs or across uneven terrain. These chairs can help individuals with reduced mobility to evacuate the building as quickly as other residents, thus reducing the risk of injury or even death.

However, many buildings do not have evacuation chairs readily available. This can result in delays during an emergency situation and potentially cost lives.

It is imperative for building owners, managers and emergency services to invest in Evac+chair evacuation chairs and to train personnel on how to use them in order to ensure the safety of all occupants in an emergency situation.

By doing so, they can significantly reduce the risk of injury or death for individuals with reduced mobility and those tasked with assisting them.

In conclusion, the "stay put" policy is not a viable option for individuals with reduced mobility during emergency situations. We must work together to make our buildings and communities safe for everyone, regardless of their mobility level.

13/01/2023

When an emergency situation arises and an unforeseen evacuation is necessary, the safety and well-being of all building residents should be the top priority. This is especially true for individuals with disabilities or reduced mobility, who may face additional challenges in the event of a fire or other emergency.

One way to protect people with disabilities or reduced mobility in a building is to have evacuation chairs in place. An evacuation chair is a specialized device designed to safely transport individuals with mobility impairments down the stairs of a building during an emergency. These chairs are lightweight, portable, and easy to operate, making them a vital tool in the event of a fire or other emergency situation.

By providing a safe and secure way for individuals with reduced mobility to evacuate the building, evacuation chairs can help to prevent injuries and save lives. In the case of the Winnipeg fire, the use of evacuation chairs may have helped to evacuate those with mobility impairments more quickly and safely, potentially reducing the number of casualties.

In addition to having evacuation chairs on hand, it is also important for building managers and owners to provide proper training for their use. This includes training for both the individuals who may need to use the chairs, as well as for the staff or volunteers who will be responsible for assisting them.

Overall, the protection of people with disabilities or reduced mobility in a building is of the utmost importance, especially in the event of an unforeseen evacuation. By having evacuation chairs in place and providing proper training for their use, we can help to ensure the safety and well-being of all building residents in the event of an emergency.

With the vulnerability of patients in hospitals or other forms of healthcare premises, emergency evacuation procedures are paramount. We need to be prepared for any eventuality to get everyone out safely when it comes to evacuating hospitals and healthcare facilities.

With the current unpredictable climate of terrorism and violence, along with fire and weather emergencies, effective emergency evacuation plans are vital. Extra precautions and considerations need to be taken into account to accommodate the individual needs of patients whatever their disabilities. Personnel and visitors with disabilities also need protection. Imagine, for a moment, you or your loved ones being left behind?

This plan should insure and include:
• Full risk identification and prevention
• Drills (identifying obstacles as they arise and before an emergency occurs)
ª Equipment required and its usage
• Training needs
• Post drill evaluation to inform any changes necessary etc.

This trial involves an Evac+Chair Evacuation chair being handled. In this trial we are measuring the ease at which other stair users can overtake the assist device during an evacuation. A group of people are inserted into the stair after the device has passed and are instructed to get out as quickly as possible. Observations included the ease at which other building occupants can evacuate alongside the device, including the space taken up while turning on a landing, the number of lanes occupied by the device on stairs and the overtaking experience of participants (derived from a post-trial questionnaire). The Evac+Chair evacuation chair is both very fast during the descent – participants having difficulty to catch the device – and participants can easily overtake the device on the 1.4m wide stair. halo evacuation evacuscape evacusafe
