When it comes to addressing complex care needs in aging populations, there’s a gap. It’s time to start closing that gap.

Andrea Thompson, Vice President, Community, Hospice, and Long-Term Care of Kensington Health, alongside Lucia Rocha, President of the Family Council at the Gardens at Kensington Health, recently sat down with the Ontario Long-Term Care Association (OLTCA) to chat about how long-term care homes, like the Gardens, are prioritizing person-centered care that takes into account not only their clinical care needs, but their cultural and social care needs too.

Kensington joined Canadians coast to coast in honouring National Day for Truth and Reconciliation today. Our teams, long-term care residents and loved ones had the privilege of hearing from Amber Skye, a Mohawk from Six Nations, Ogwehoweh health professional, and Associate Dean - Health Services at Six Nations Polytechnic. Amber’s reflections and insights on reconciliation in the healthcare sector reminded us that it is not just a word, but a journey that calls for humility, action, and a lasting commitment to change.

As we move forward, Kensington remains dedicated to continuous learning and meaningful dialogue with our community and taking concrete steps toward reconciliation. This is only the beginning of our work to support transformative action in the healthcare system for Indigenous health equity.

History made at the Eye Institute at Kensington Health today! 👁️

The Eye Institute is honoured to be the first surgical centre in Canada to use a new system that brings together two common eye surgeries into one! Until now, for complex cases, where patients required both cataract and vitreoretinal surgery, eye surgeons and their clinical care teams had to operate with two different machines. This new system changes the game, not only making recovery more comfortable and faster for patients, but improving time and resources in ORs for surgeons and their clinical care teams.

Dr. Rosa Braga-Mele, complex cataract specialist at the Eye Institute, has been instrumental in the development of this innovation, working diligently with engineers and fellow surgeons for over a decade. Learn more about her involvement in this groundbreaking technology and what the system means for the future of eye care at Kensington Health: https://kensingtonhealth.org/blog/post/first-surgical-centre-to-operate-new-eye-surgery-technology 🔗

Two of our very own ophthalmic technologists, Julia and Godfrey, took the stage at the Canadian Ophthalmological Society’s national conference 2025!

They represented Kensington Health with presentations on intraocular lens counselling and clinical electrophysiology, showcasing the expertise, innovation, and heart behind the care we provide every day.

“Since Kensington is the only facility offering adult visual electrophysiology in the Greater Toronto Area, I was proud to show the calibre of work we do here,” said Godfrey.

Last night at the Comedy Bar Danforth, five members of the Second Mile Club at Kensington Health proved it’s never too late to try something totally new – and totally terrifying: standup comedy. 🎤

From kayak fiascos to Santa suits to one unforgettable audition, the comics of “Die Laughing” had the crowd roaring with laughter. After weeks of writing, rehearsing, and stepping way out of their comfort zones, with support from and , these older adults delivered a show that was raw, real, and ridiculously funny. Shoutout to Alan, Susan, Dean, Jack, and Gordon for showing us that you can always find your funny bone (even if you’ve had it replaced)! 🥁

🌈 No one should have to hide who they are – especially in their own home.

Every resident deserves to feel safe, seen, and supported, and at The Gardens at Kensington Health, our long-term care home, Gay Ol’ Times is doing just that. Led by Minhi Wang (), local drag superstar and former Canada’s Drag Race contestant, Gay Ol’ Times is a monthly program that helps create an inclusive and affirming space for 2SLGBTQIA+ seniors and other older adults through drag performances and storytelling.

Hear from Minhi and Justine Humphries, Vice President, Strategy, People & Partnerships, at Kensington Health, on the importance of fostering inclusion and celebrating community through specialized programming in long-term care settings.
