Sugar is found in many foods, both naturally or added. Sugar provides energy (calories) but has no nutritional value on its own. Sugars are often added to processed foods to improve their flavor, color, texture and shelf-life. Consuming too much sugar is associated with heart disease, stroke, obesity, diabetes, high blood cholesterol, cancer and cavities.

Here are a few tips to Reduce your Sugar Intake:

1. Don’t "drink your calories" & avoid sugary drinks
2. Try whole foods with minimal processing
3. Snack sensibly and consciously
4. Eat lower-sugar cereals
5. Cook at home more often
6. Use substitutes as much as possible
7. Read the Nutrition Facts table and the ingredient list on packaged foods

Struggling to achieve quality sleep? Establish a consistent sleep schedule by going to bed and waking up at the same time every day. This practice regulates your body's internal clock, facilitating easier sleep onset and awakening. Develop a calming bedtime routine by engaging in activities such as reading, practicing mindfulness, or taking a warm bath—these signal to your body that it is time to wind down. Reducing screen time before sleep can significantly enhance sleep quality; limit exposure to blue light from devices at least one hour prior to bedtime. Additionally, transform your bedroom into a restful sanctuary by maintaining a dark, cool, and quiet environment. Quality sleep enhances mood, improves focus, and supports overall health. Prioritize your rest!

Join Premier Health in Recognizing January as Firefighter Cancer Awareness Month!

Fire fighter occupational cancer is the leading cause of line-of-duty death in the fire service.

In 2023, 72% of IAFF member line-of-duty deaths were due to occupational cancer. In Canada, where most provinces and territories have robust presumptive laws, close to 94% of line-of-duty deaths among professional fire fighters are the result of occupational cancers.

Canada recognized Fire Fighter Cancer Awareness Month in 2023 with the adoption of MP Sherry Romanado’s Bill C-224.

Bringing increased public awareness of occupational cancer in the fire service is the goal of Fire Fighter Cancer Awareness Month. Together, we can generate greater legislative support for states and provinces to establish presumptive disabilities for all cancers affecting fire fighters!

Don’t ignore persistent fatigue. Feeling tired all the time isn’t always due to stress or lack of sleep. Ongoing fatigue can be an early sign of conditions like anemia, thyroid disorders, sleep apnea, or depression. If fatigue lasts more than 2–3 weeks, it’s worth getting checked.

Join Premier Health in recognizing January as Alzheimer's Awareness Month!

Each January, the Alzheimer Society supports and leads Canada's Alzheimer's Awareness Month.
During this month, we at the Society encourage organizations across Canada, and individuals like you, to learn more about dementia and its stark impact on Canadians.

Almost half a million people in Canada live with dementia, impacting not only themselves, but their loved ones and caregivers as well. While the risk of dementia increases with age, it is not an inevitable part of aging. Alzheimer's is the most common cause of dementia, a general term for memory loss and other cognitive abilities serious enough to interfere with daily life. Alzheimer's disease accounts for 60-80% of dementia cases.
