🌕 The Song of Turtle’s Back
(An Anishinaabe-Inspired Poem)
On Turtle’s back, where rivers bloom,
The songs of children fill the womb.
From Sky Woman’s tears, seeds fell like rain,
And from that Earth, they rose again.
The flowers swayed, the dragonflies danced,
The Spirit Wind in silence glanced.
But soon the winds began to cry,
As children’s songs grew still — and died.
They took the names, they cut the braid,
They silenced what the Elders made.
Yet Turtle whispered in the deep:
“No child shall ever die in sleep.”
Each swirl upon his sacred shell,
Holds voices where the lost ones dwell.
The grandmothers light sacred fire,
And lift their songs forever higher.
The eagle circles in the sky,
A prayer for truth that will not die.
And dragonflies in mourning flew,
To carry dreams that still feel true.
The sun returns with crimson light,
The women dressed in stars so bright.
With braided hair and eyes that gleam,
They walk the path of ancient dream.
“Every Child,” they chant and sing,
“Is sacred as the breath of spring.
From root to star, from moon to shore,
Their spirits rise — forevermore.”

In 2017, Destany “Sky” Pete, a high school student from the Duck Valley Indian Reservation, won her regional science fair by demonstrating that a traditional Native American recipe could inhibit cancer cell growth. Her project focused on chokecherry pudding, a dish made with crushed chokecherry seeds, which her community's elders believed had health benefits.

Pete collaborated with Dr. Ken Cornell, a biochemistry professor at Boise State University, to test different chokecherry preparations on uterine sarcoma cancer cells. The results revealed that only the traditionally prepared pudding, which included the crushed seeds, showed significant cancer-inhibiting properties.

This discovery highlighted the potential medicinal value of Indigenous foods and connected traditional knowledge with modern scientific research. Pete's work not only demonstrated the importance of preserving cultural heritage but also showed how it could help address contemporary health challenges.

Her success underscores the value of integrating Indigenous wisdom into the scientific community, offering a new perspective on cancer treatment.
