Postpartum (and parenthood in general) can feel like a whirlwind — one minute you’re rocking it, establishing a routine, the next you’re crying because your toast fell butter-side down 😅
But here’s the thing: you don’t have to do it all alone.
As a doula, I’ve supported moms (and been supports by moms!) through those blurry, beautiful, overwhelming early days — and I’ve gathered a few ‘cheat codes’ along the way.
These 5 tips won’t fix everything, but they can help bring a little more peace, connection, and breath into your days.
You’re not meant to figure it all out solo. I’m here, and I’ve got you 💛

As we close out Caesarean Awareness Month, I wanted to take a moment to honour the strength and bravery of C-section mamas.

Every birth story is different. Every circumstance is layered. There’s no one-size-fits-all when it comes to bringing life into the world.

What I do know for sure? No one chooses major abdominal surgery because they think “this is a relaxing and peaceful way to spend my Tuesday”. C-section mamas put their own plans, preferences, and comfort aside to do what was best for their baby and their family in that moment.

That selfless decision — that fierce, instinctual love — is the very definition of a mama bear. And it deserves to be seen, respected, and celebrated.

Hospital births can get a bad wrap at times but I’m here to remind you that with the right birth team ✨your birth can be calm, peaceful and empowering regardless of the setting✨.
With the knowledge to make informed decisions, skills to advocate for yourself (or your loved one) and team that is in tuned with your needs that bright hospital room can be transformed into a cozy cave and your needs/ wants for your birth will be respected.
Whether you feel safest in a hospital setting, have to be transferred during birth for any reason or have to unexpectedly start your birth journey in a hospital for medical reasons birth can look however you want it to.

Reach out if you’d like help to manifest and achieve your dream birth 💛💪

3 Common Doula Myths Debunked! ✨

🏡Doulas only support home births

As a doula I am here to support YOU. Unconditional to your birth preferences. If having a home birth feels coziest to you, I’m there! Hospital birth, birth centre, elective cesarean, water birth, induction birth… all of these are valid birth choices and doulas are there to support you through every minute of your journey. You know your body best and it isn’t up to anyone else but you to decide what your birth looks like.

👭 If you have a midwife you don’t need a doula. (And vice versa)

Midwives are trained medical professionals who are there to make sure you and your baby are safe through the whole birth journey.
Doulas are there to support your family through education, physical support and emotional support.
Doulas and midwives compliment eachother beautifully but you can have both a midwife and a doula, just a doula (with an OB) or just a midwife. Your birth, your choice.

💪 You don’t need a doula if you have a supportive partner.

Doulas support BOTH you and your partner through the birth process. Your partner is an expert on you and we are experts on all things pregnancy, birth and postpartum. We all work together, the doula enabling the partner to feel more confident in their role in supporting you through the birth.

6 Benefits to Hiring a Birth Doula ☀️

Building your dream birth team is so important…
Every family deserves the unwavering and dedicated support a Birth Doula can provide 💛.
Some tangible reasons why you may want to consider having a doula by your side…

1) Decreased need for pitocin (by 30%!!)
Pitocin is a drug that is used by hospitals to make a mommas contractions more regular and kickstart labour. There are a lot of really great things about pitocin but like any intervention has drawbacks. Having a doula present decreases the odds of unnecessary interventions significantly.

2) Decreased need for pain medicine.
Doulas come with a whole toolkit (literally and figuratively) of tips and tricks on how to naturally combat the discomfort that comes along with birth. If you choose to go with pain meds, we can also help with comfort measures alongside the meds!

3) Reduction in c-section risk.
The continuous support throughout the entire labour process has been shown to decrease the chances that you may need an emergency c-section.

4) Decrease in postpartum depression.💛
The best kept secret for combating postpartum mood disorders is help. With a doula in your corner from day 1, educating and empowering you, as well as physically supporting you through it all will equip you with all the resources you need to set yourself up for success in your postpartum mental health journey.

5) Shorter labour times!
Every minute counts when it comes to birth. A doula can help with evidence based education and suggestions on positions and movements to help the baby engage efficiently and arrive safely.

6) ++ Confidence and satisfaction!
My favourite part of being a doula is educating parents on everything they need to know going into the birth so they can show up confident, empowered and feeling fully prepared to enter this beautiful chapter together.💛

A friend said to me today (while discussing how her partner was sad to see her in pain during my her birth) that when we reframe our thought process as to “not being HURT but instead…. having a baby!” it changes how we view the pain of labour. And she was right.

A reminder that birth can also look like THIS.
Even when the birth isn’t exactly following the plan you have in your mind, birth can still be beautiful. It’s not always scary. There are so many different experiences and your birth will be your own. Beautiful and perfect in its own way💛.

Holding space for those that did have births that were scary or traumatic💛.

Reminder that two things can exist at once. Always.

You can want “just a healthy baby” your entire life… and then have gender disappointment… and then not be able to imagine anything but your sweet dream boy soon after.
You can be the most exhausted you’ve ever been but also have the most love to give you’ve ever imagined.
You can be going through the most challenging chapter your relationship has ever faced and also feel the closest and most connected you’ve ever felt.
You can have all your dreams come true, be madly in love with your new life and also struggle with perinatal depression… followed by postpartum depression…
You can dread being alone and crave solitude and quiet at the same time.

Everything can exist at once. And that’s okay. 💛

I’m moving to Toronto! 💫

I’ve been a little quiet on this platform for a while and haven’t given many life updates but…
I have been on the most beautiful life journey that has led to a very big decision to begin a new chapter in Toronto.

The families, doulas and communities I have been lucky enough to connect with in Ottawa have impacted my life in the best way and I will forever be thankful.

I will still be available for any virtual support to clients in any location and would love to keep in touch with my Ottawa Doula Community 🥰.

If you’re in the GTA or know someone in the GTA who could benefit from some doula love and support… please send them my way!

Accepting birth, postpartum and perinatal education clients starting in August. 💛

If your friend had trouble falling asleep at night or certain food upset their tummy, would you say they are bad or there is something wrong with them? Why do we ask if babies and children are “good” if they sleep well, are more quiet, eat and digest easily, etc. ?

Let’s start reframing the conversation around “good” babies and children. They are all still learning, just like us. Trouble sleeping, frustration and periods where babies eat less/more are all part of normal development. Whether your baby sleeps a lot, has a little trouble staying asleep, eats a little/ a lot, is more vocal or just wants to sit and observe…. They are perfect just as they are. Babies are not meant to come into this world having it all figured out.

Instead of asking parents if their baby/child is “a good baby” why don’t we start celebrating children just as they are?

You can be an amazing momma, love your baby AND STILL...
Feel sad.
Miss your old life.
Miss being pregnant.
Miss your pre pregnancy body.
Want to be alone.
Want to sleep 12 hours and binge Netflix.
Want to be around your baby 24/7.
Not want to be around your baby 24/7.
Be surprised at how hard it is to be a mom.
Need a break.
Not want to be touched anymore.
Be sick of constant noise.
Want to scream and cry.
Want a day (or two) off from being a mom.

You are an incredible, multi-faceted, strong human being and it is more than okay to feel polarizing emotions.
A friendly reminder that you can’t pour from an empty cup. When you feel those emotions of being drained and needing a break, take a break if possible! Even if it’s 10 minutes for a quiet meditation alone in the shower. Being a momma doesn’t make you ONLY a momma. There are so many parts to you and they are all gorgeous and deserve recognition. You are doing more than okay just the way you are.
