Jury duty is our most important civic duty and core to our democracy. The right to a trial by ones peers is enshrined in our Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

Thank you Minister Arif Virani for supporting Jury Duty Appreciation Week, and acknowledging the importance of civic duty, and thanking jurors for their service and sacrifice.
Jury Duty Appreciation Week also coincides with Mental Health Week. Jurors can now access post-trial support services in many Provinces, as well as the BC Jury Duty Peer Support Program available through the Commission at: https://www.canadianjuriescommission.ca

"After the trial, I felt overwhelmed, scared, angry, ashamed, and isolated. As a Peer Supporter, I'm offering a real sense of hope and support to jurors."
- Former Juror, Peer Supporter
Our Peer Supporters are former jurors, giving back to support their community.
Many have taken a difficult experience and have overcome challenges to be a source of support for others in need.
Canadian Juries Commission is proud to have launched the first Jury Duty Peer Support Program in Canada, piloted in British Columbia.
We look forward to extending this program across Canada.

For many jury duty is a rewarding experience, but for some it can be extremely challenging, and even life altering.
Our founder Mark Farrant spoke to the Windsor Star about the importance of supporting juror mental health, and the value of peer support for jurors.

Windsor saw a number of sometimes grisly jury murder trials in 2023. Jury duty is a civic duty in a democracy, but can exact a heavy toll.

12/23/2023

Jury duty is our civic duty, but it can be a stressful experience.
Peer Support is available in British Columbia to jurors after their jury service is complete. Our Peer Supporters are former jurors who understand the challenges associated with jury duty, and are here to support you.
Thank you for your service.

Willingness to serve on a jury remains extremely low across Canada.
Canadians expressed concerns about time away from home/work, employment issues, and financial hardship.
Some expressed concerns with the legal system, and the burden of delivering justice.
Others reinforced their civic duty to support the justice system, and serve the community.

Willingness to serve on a jury continues to be extremely low across Canada, driven by economic and cost of living concerns. More Canadians are willing to donate blood than serve on a jury.
Our latest Jury Duty Opinion Study reveals more insights and recommendations.
