Thank you to the Ontario Hospital Association for showcasing our work!

Sinai Health is proud to lead the way provincially, with Ontario’s first fully digitized patient experience survey. Guided by direct feedback from our Patient and Family Advisory Councils, the survey’s design ensures that each question is clinically relevant, actionable, and reflective of real patient and family experiences.

This feedback allows us to benchmark across Ontario, measure the impact of our initiatives, and continue building a future shaped by the voices of those we serve.

Mount Sinai Hospital is leading the way as the first hospital in Canada to integrate Placental Growth Factor (PlGF) blood testing for early detection of preeclampsia, a potentially life-threatening condition in pregnancy characterized by dangerously high blood pressure or hypertension.

Dr. Kelsey McLaughlin has advanced Mount Sinai's leadership in preeclampsia research and management, also leading the Canadian PIGF Strategy and Research Consortium to expand this life-saving screening tool to other centres nationwide, including remote communities where undiagnosed cases carry serious risks.

“On top of the immediate dangers that it poses during pregnancy, a preeclamptic pregnancy can lead to heart disease, kidney disease and stroke later in life,” says Dr. McLaughlin. “So, the earlier we start managing it, the better.”

She collaborates with Sinai Health’s Dr. John Snelgrove and Dr. John Kingdom in a research group committed to revolutionizing preeclampsia screening, diagnosis and management, ensuring better care for families across Canada.

Congratulations to Dr. Keith Jarvi and his team at Sinai Health for receiving a $3.3M
Genome Canada funding boost!

This funding will enable the development and validation of a new and unique semen biomarker test that could transform prostate cancer detection. It could potentially spare 6,000 men unnecessary biopsies every year, identify aggressive prostate cancer early and more accurately and improve patient outcomes.

Older adults are often prescribed multiple medications but not all of them are needed, which can lead to unnecessary side effects.

Now a new report by Dr. Paula Rochon, Director of Research, Weston and O’Born Centre for Mature Women’s Health and Senior Clinician Scientist, Lunenfeld-Tanenbaum Research Institute, and a panel of international experts, including Sinai Health’s Drs. Nathan Stall and Christina Repas, outlines the common drugs that are often prescribed together inappropriately.

This list will help clinicians detect potentially inappropriate prescribing habits to enhance medications safety for older adults.

For many women treated for breast cancer, the end of chemotherapy or anti-estrogen therapy marks the start of another challenge – severe menopausal symptoms caused by the treatment itself.

Anti-estrogen therapies and chemotherapy can trigger sudden and severe menopausal symptoms, which are not only distressing but can also lead some patients to stop life-saving treatment early.

The groundbreaking SHE-CAN (Sexual HEalth in breast CANcer) Clinic at Mount Sinai Hospital aims to address this long-overdue need for specialized care. The clinic is the first of its kind in Canada dedicated to supporting women experiencing treatment-induced menopause.

A collaboration between the Weston and O’Born Centre for Mature Women’s Health and the Marvelle Koffler Breast Centre, the clinic brings together gynecology, oncology and sexual health expertise to offer patients integrated, evidence-based care. It also supports younger cancer patients through the PYNK program for women under 45.

The SHE-CAN Clinic reflects Sinai Health’s broader commitment to advancing women’s health, and to ensuring every patient feels supported and cared for, through treatment and beyond.

How did hospitals adapt during the COVID-19 pandemic — and what can we learn from it?

Two new studies led by Sinai Health’s Dr. Lianne Jeffs, Chief Scientific Officer of Science of Care Institute, explore how healthcare teams across Canada responded to staffing shortages, patient surges, and evolving care needs.

From redeploying staff to creating new roles like clinical externs, these changes helped hospitals stay afloat—but not without challenges. The research also highlights the emotional toll on healthcare workers and the importance of planning ahead for future crises.

What started as a student project became a fertility preservation breakthrough. A recent feature from U of T Medicine highlights Madison Erb & Dr. Jennia Michaeli's work on Canada's first coordinated ovarian tissue cryopreservation program Mount Sinai Fertility’s support.

While studying in U of T’s MHSc in Laboratory Medicine, Madison Erb met Dr. Jennia Michaeli, a fertility specialist and mentor with experience in a groundbreaking technique: ovarian tissue cryopreservation.

Together, they helped build Canada’s first coordinated program, right here at Mount Sinai Fertility, giving hope to young cancer patients who want the chance to have children in the future. Unlike egg freezing, this technique works for children and those needing urgent care. It’s already helping families across Ontario through partnerships with SickKids (SickKids Foundation), Princess Margaret Cancer Centre (University Health Network), and others.

“We’re training leaders who can build fertility programs like this,” says Dr. Michaeli.
Their work is a powerful reminder of how research, innovation, and compassion can make a real difference.

At Sinai Health, today’s students might just be tomorrow’s teachers.

👋 Meet Corey, a physiotherapist at Hennick Bridgepoint Hospital. He started his journey as a student on two clinical placements at the hospital, where he learned the clinical and technical skills needed to launch his career.

Today, he’s come full circle in his full-time position at Hennick Bridgepoint, taking on the role of preceptor himself, teaching those same skills in the place where he was once a student.

Corey’s path from student to educator at Sinai Health is not that unusual. Sinai Health has a rich culture of learning and professional development, where preceptors pass along a passion for education along with the clinical skills they teach.
