What is Milia
Milia is small, hard, white, or yellowish pumps that typically appear on the face - often found around the eyes, cheeks, or forehead. They are keratin- filled cysts that form when dead cells get trapped under the skins surface instead of being naturally exfoliated.
Although they can be a pain and cosmetically frustrating. They are not harmful and do not need immediate attention.
Prevention
📍Regular exfoliation, i.e., with glycolic or lactic acid, to encourage cell turnover.
📍Proper daily cleaning with the appropriate cleanser. Skintype matters when selecting the appropriate cleanser. Oily skin can benefit from a foam cleanser, while dehydrated/dry skin will respond better to a cleanser that is cream based or milky in texture.
📍Avoiding heavy products around the eyes. Opt for non-comedogenic moisturizers and avoid thick creams around the orbital bone.
📍UV damage can thicken the skin and cause milia to form on the high points of the face, i.e., cheeks and eye area. Always use a mineral sunscreen.
At DGF SkinMed, we offer milia extractions.
