Before starting IVF, it’s important to know what to expect.

Every IVF cycle begins with a personalized plan that includes priming, stimulation, ovulation suppression, and trigger medications. The goal is to stimulate the ovaries and retrieve enough healthy eggs to create embryos and support pregnancy.

Every step of the way, your plan is monitored and adjusted based on how your body responds.

These posts are for educational purposes only. Please speak with your IVF specialist if you have questions about your specific plan.

The internet has a lot of opinions on how people grow their families. As an OBGYN, my priority is working with my patients to find the family-building options that are right for them.

We should celebrate the science that makes these choices possible, rather than judging the path taken.

There are many reasons an IVF plan can change or an embryo transfer can be cancelled, like a thin endometrium, a new finding on ultrasound or bloodwork (cyst, fluid, progesterone rising too early), or timing that is not quite right.

But every once in a while, nature steps in and surprises us all. One of the very best reasons is when we discover you are already pregnant.

That is exactly what happened this week. We cancelled the transfer, and we got to share truly unexpected news with our patient.

In this field, we spend so much time focusing on protocols, timing, and data. Moments like this are a beautiful reminder: there is always room for hope, and sometimes the “change in plan” is exactly what we were waiting for.

Egg freezing isn’t one-size-fits-all, and age plays a bigger role than most people realize.

The number of eggs you need to freeze (and thus, the number of egg freezing cycles you may need) depends on your egg quality, egg quantity, and family planning goals. Your age tells us how many eggs we’ll need.

Freezing earlier doesn’t mean you need to use it now. It means you’re preserving options while efficiency and quality are on your side. Swipe through to see how the numbers really change at 30, 35, and 40.

Remember, this is for education only and not medical advice. Talk to your doctor about what’s best for you.

IVF patients hear a lot of genetic testing terms, and two of the most commonly confused are carrier screening and PGT-A.

Carrier screening is a test on you (blood or saliva). It looks for gene changes linked to inherited single-gene conditions. It helps answer: “Are we at increased risk of passing on a specific condition?”

PGT-A is a test on embryos during IVF. It screens embryos for chromosome number issues (aneuploidy). It helps answer: “Which embryo is more likely to have the typical number of chromosomes?”

If you feel confused, you are not alone - swipe to learn more.

Ask your clinic what each test covers, and if results raise concern, a genetic counsellor can walk you through risks and options.

If you’re hoping to start trying in 2026, consider carrier screening now.

Carrier screening is a genetic test (usually a blood test) that checks whether you carry gene changes linked to inherited conditions. Most carriers are healthy and have no symptoms.

If results suggest increased risk, a genetic counsellor can explain what it means and review next steps and options. Swipe to learn more about it.

This post is for education purposes only and is not medical advice. See your health care provider to find out if carrier screening makes sense for you.

If you’re trying to conceive in 2026, there are steps you can take now to support your health and fertility.

However, it’s also important to know when to ask for help.

If you are 35+, consider getting help after 6 months of trying.

If you are under 35, consider getting help after 12 months.

Consider visiting your healthcare provider sooner if cycles are irregular or you have known risk factors.

Fertility care is time-sensitive, and when the protocol says today is the day, today really is the day.

A huge acknowledgment to all the fertility warriors showing up for their cycle monitoring, egg retrievals and embryos transfers despite the weather. We see the effort it takes, and we don’t take it lightly. Stay safe out there!
