I cannot even express what a huge deal this is! The Canadian association for SLPs (SAC) has put out a position statement that SLPs *MUST* provide neurodiversity-affirming services when working with Autistic individuals across the lifespan!! They're working on putting out a statement for the Audiologists as well! The language they used is VERY CLEAR!

This is so important to understand... The Double Empathy Problem goes both ways! We can't and shouldn't expect autistic kids to carry all the weight of changing, especially when we know from research how psychologically damaging this is! I'm so glad that the SLP field is moving more towards neurodiversity-affirming approaches!

Social skills are bidirectional. It takes two to tango.

The onus for change is typically placed on autistic kids…expecting them to mask their autistic traits and start using neurotypical social skills. This suggests that there is only one “right” way of socializing.

Autistic kids have social skills…they are just different from neurotypical social skills.

Different. Not less.

Any social skills training done should be bidirectional. We should help autistic kids understand neurotypical social skills and simultaneously help neurotypical kids understand autistic social skills.

* Is providing neurodiversity affirming services different from what most of us were taught? Yes. But you know the saying…KNOW BETTER, DO BETTER.

It’s time to do better.

What a wonderful idea! Speaking from personal experience, sometimes, no matter how well-meaning we are and how accepting we try to be, it can be difficult to accept a family member's differences because it's at such a personal level! Would love to see this be offered as a part of the process for every family going through a diagnosis!

I've been really diving into the world of Gestalt Language Processing / Natural Language Acquisition. One of my families this week found this blog post by the amazing Lily Konyn at AssistiveWare that is such a great description for parents and other non-SLPs/CDAs or even SLPs/CDAs who are new to the word of GLP / NLA. My sister is a Gestalt Language Processor and, going through my training in this, so much makes sense and I wonder how the SLP world didn't grasp hold of this decades ago. Is anyone in your family or perhaps you yourself a Gestalt Language Processor?

Gestalt Language Processing is getting a lot of buzz in the field of AAC. AssistiveWare Support Team member and part-time AAC user Lily Konyn dives deeper into what it means and, most importantly, how it might influence our AAC tools and supports.

I have this come up so often with my clients- Nicole Pratt is my go-to when it comes to paediatric feeding, I highly recommend checking out her post on this! If a strategy has worked for you, what's that been? What would you recommend to others? Have you approached a feeding therapist for help with your child not eating at school?

.
This has been a hot topic with my patients/families over the past couple of weeks. I invite you to read my latest blog for strategies to help your child’s feeding success at school. Click the link in my bio to learn more👆🏼🍏📕

Starting Marge Blanc's Natural Language Acquisition course # 1 - So excited to be able to broaden my knowledge on Gestalt Language Learners and how to help them progress with their development of language! Finally there is a movement in the SLP field to recognize echolalia/scripts and the power of them and I get to put what I've been seeing for years and trying to navigate into proper research-based practice! Have signed up for all 3 of her courses and will then be taking the Meaningful Speech course on it!

I absolutely love seeing more representation of neurodiversity in children's shows! How wonderful is it that autistic children get to see a character like them in such a much-loved show like Thomas the Tank Engine??

Thomas the Train is getting a new friend, as the iconic British television franchise “Thomas & Friends” introduces its first character with autism, Bruno the Brake Car. The characte…

Sharing a colleague's post because this is also how I feel so strongly. It can be quite hurtful to try to stop someone from moving, stimming, using echolalia, etc. Their brains and bodies need to do this. It is how they learn. I will never stop someone, child or adult, in my service from moving, stimming, or using echolalia. In fact, I encourage it if it's what they need. I run my practice on acceptance and trying to "extinguish" these (stop someone from doing them) is the opposite of acceptance.
