Réal J. A. Mandeville was born in 1928 and raised in Montreal, where his lifelong commitment to service began early. At age 11, he joined the Sea Cadets. By 17, he had enlisted in the Navy Reserve, following in the footsteps of his older brother Marcel, who served in the Navy during the war.
Réal later transitioned into the Royal Canadian Air Force, where he would go on to serve with pride for over 30 years. Rising to the rank of Master Warrant Officer, he worked within the Canadian Forces, coordinating and overseeing air operations. One of his proudest roles was serving as an officer in charge of VIP flights, ensuring the safe and efficient transport of high-ranking officials.
Réal’s service took him across Canada and around the world. He spent six months stationed in Alert, near the North Pole, and fondly recalled how performers would visit during Christmas to boost morale, bringing laughter and warmth to the frozen base. Though he didn’t pilot large military aircraft, Réal flew smaller planes and worked closely with air crews, always taking pride in the responsibility that came with his position.
Beyond his military career, Réal led a rich and fulfilling personal life. He married his beloved wife, Helen, with whom he shared over 80 years of companionship and countless adventures. Together they traveled overseas, attended events, and made the most of every moment. He often jokes about how much he spoiled her, and he loves to recall her joy at bingo nights, where she was happiest surrounded by friends and laughter.
Outside of his service, Réal is known for his strength, humor, and generosity. A talented athlete in his younger years, he competed in weightlifting and even trained as a backup for Canada’s Olympic team. He came from a large, loving family of six sisters and two brothers. He later became a devoted father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.
Réal is a man who carried both his service and his stories with grace and full of life. From his early days in the Sea Cadets to his decades with the Royal Canadian Air Force, Master Warrant Officer Réal J. A. Mandeville is remembered for his dedication, kindness, and unwavering pride in serving his country.
