What makes a Successful Student?
We have over 100 Award students and having worked with all of them, I would say they all share some common points-
1) The ability to focus for long periods (30-60 mins) with being distracted.
2) Doing their work regularly and consistently. Our best students have developed DISCIPLINE.
3) Willingness to try by themselves and if they fail, they try again. DETERMINATION and RESILIENCE.
All these traits are developed with the program at the center. Other than teaching kids how to work with fractions or what a "dependent clause" is, within our Math and Reading programs, we help develop all these traits. Let me explain-
In class, my staff and I are always patrolling the class room reminding our new students -"head down and focus on finishing your work"- helping develop their attention span. Its like a muscle, attention span increases the more you use it. (They are so used to gaming and Tiktok, many students initially struggle to focus for more than 5 mins! After 3-6 months, we have corrected that.)
Students learn to be independent as we encourage them to correct the mistakes. (We don't immediately jump in and solve their problems.) Student learn to be resilient and gain the confidence that they can face problems and solve them by themselves.
Many adults lack the discipline to do 20 minutes of exercise everyday but with Kumon, we train our students to do at least 30 mins of homework everyday. Some students who are enrolled in Math and English do 1 hour of homework everyday. They have developed discipline as a child that many adults don't have! With this type of disciple, is it any wonder that they become successful students!
Some of our best students have been enrolled since they were 5 years old so you can imagine how disciplined they are! We have them posted on our Wall of Honor. This is how they will live their life- they have learnt that a little bit of work everyday over a span of a few years can really pay off. Like a savings account-if you put $1 in a bank account everyday, you will have over $4500 after 10 years (5% interest)-same with the Kumon system.
Also just like a savings account, the gain is greater when you start early. Over the past 3 months, we have had over 20 kids join us that are 3-5 years old. Imagine how great their academic career will be! I will have to make more space on my wall for them as they will definitely be Platinum or Gold Award winners!

Here is our updated Wall Of Honor. We have added even more of our Award students. (we have over 140 Awards Students so we cannot fit everyone in!)

We even have our Poster from our Awards Event from 2013-2016 mounted. Some of those young kids from that event are still with us and are Platinum Award winners and Program Completers.

Our goal at Chartwell Kumon is to get all of our students who have been with us for 1 year + to become Award Students and MANY of our new additions to our wall are 1 year students!

We know that hard work and commitment pays off and so we try to recognize our top students ….and "Yes!", we hire our top students to work for us so that they can help more students become academically advanced.

Completing the Math Program at Kumon is an amazing accomplishment. (The Math in later levels exceeds the Math in high school and so it's certainly not easy!)

Michael started in elementary school, became an Award student, was always ahead of his grade and managed to complete level O in Grade 12 to complete the program. Michael in now in the University of Toronto, pursuing Business but he still works at Chartwell Kumon, helping students become Math wizards like him.

Michael is not only a great student, he is a great staff member and I am so proud to have him on my team!

At Chartwell Kumon, we have over 100 Award Students, including over 30 students that are studying material that 2 or 3 years ahead of their grade level BUT there is no award greater that a Program Completer award.

This is Kajoliey. She just completed the FULL READING program and she is only in Grade 10. Kajoliey has been an award student for many years and we are pleased that she has now joined our staff. ( We like hiring our best students!)

What's secret to being so far ahead of her school level? Kajoliey has been enrolled for about 10 years. She has always displayed hard work and dedication and now she is way ahead of her classmates!

What's the secret of our Awards Students?

We have over 25 students that are studying material that is 2 or 3 years ahead of their grade level(Platinum and Gold Medal Winners). What is their secret?

I would say it is 1 thing- they (and their parents) display commitment..

1) They all started more than 2 years ago and they started in early grades or in kindergarten. Success doesn't happen overnight.

2) They all do small amounts of REGULAR work over a long period of time. They don't try to do overwhelming amounts of work.

3) They don't quit.

Meet Tanishq, a Kumon Student since 2022. He has enjoyed that the Kumon worksheets guide him through concepts step by step, helping him hone his self-learning skills, which have helped him to become an Honors English student 📚. Now, he breezes through topics like Figurative Language (thanks, level L!).
