As a baby, Alex walked on his toes and had "the world’s tightest hamstrings." It wasn’t long before he was diagnosed with cerebral palsy. After his inpatient stay at Holland Bloorview, Alex swims, rides his bike and plays basketball with far less discomfort in his legs.

But living two hours outside Toronto, Alex also knows the challenges of getting care in a small community. Where he lives, affordable physiotherapy is hard to find—and even harder finding someone trained to work with kids with disabilities.

That’s why Alex is using his voice as a honorary chair. He’s speaking up for kids with disabilities everywhere, so they can get the care they need no matter where they live.

September 30th is Truth and Reconciliation Day, a time to honour the survivors of residential schools, the children who never returned home, and their families and communities.

At Holland Bloorview, our work towards Truth and Reconciliation calls on us to reflect deeply on our role in colonization and to take meaningful steps toward decolonization in health care. Over the past several years, we’ve listened, we’ve learned, and we’ve acted.

Through education, inclusive practices, and traditional healing, we are actively working to transform our systems to provide culturally safe and equitable care. This is an ongoing journey, one that requires trusted partnerships, humility, reflection and sustained action.
