Ontario Drivers Are Feeling the Pinch…

If your auto insurance just went up, even though you haven’t had an accident or ticket, you’re definitely not alone. Premiums across Ontario have climbed again this year, and many people are seeing increases of hundreds of dollars at renewal.

Why?
• Repair and parts costs keep rising (today’s cars are expensive to fix).
• Auto theft rates are still driving up claim costs.
• Fraud and staged collisions continue to affect everyone’s premiums.
• Injury and liability claims have become more expensive over time.

The result? Even “safe” drivers are paying more, and many are being forced to raise their deductibles or cut optional coverage just to keep costs manageable.

It’s becoming a major cost-of-living issue, especially for young drivers, commuters, and anyone already stretching their budget.

Ontario’s auto insurance system clearly needs attention… but for now, we’re all feeling it.

Before you assume your home insurance has you fully protected, here are a few common gaps many Ontario homeowners don’t realize exist:

1️⃣ Overland Flooding
Water entering your home from overflowing lakes, rivers, or heavy rain isn’t usually included. You typically need an optional overland flood endorsement.

2️⃣ Sewer Backup
Damage from a backed-up sewer, septic system, or sump pump often requires separate add-on coverage.

3️⃣ Earthquakes
Yes—Ontario can experience small earthquakes, and standard home policies generally exclude earthquake damage unless you add coverage.

4️⃣ Home-Based Business Losses
Running a business from home? Your equipment, inventory, and liability might not be covered without proper business-use add-ons.

5️⃣ Wear and Tear / Maintenance Issues
Things like aging roofs, mold, gradual leaks, or pest damage are considered maintenance and usually not insured.

🔍 Tip: Every insurer is different, so it’s important to review your policy and consider optional coverages that fit your needs.

🚗❄️ Winter Tire Tip ❄️🚗
Did you know that in Ontario, having winter tires on your vehicle can sometimes help lower your auto insurance premiums?
Why? Because insurers recognize that winter tires improve traction, reduce braking distance, and lower the risk of accidents on icy or snowy roads. Fewer accidents mean less risk for the insurance company, and potential savings for you.
👉 Pro tip: Make sure your tires are marked with the mountain snowflake symbol to qualify, and let your insurance provider know once they’re installed.
