👩‍👧‍👦 Take Your Kid to Work Day at Humber Meadows 👨‍👧‍👦

Today we welcomed the next generation of caregivers, leaders, and community builders! Our visiting grade 9 students got a behind-the-scenes look at every corner of our home — from touring the kitchen, laundry, and even the roof — to hands-on learning with our amazing team. They jumped right in with hands-on experiences too: taking vitals with our nurses, watching a flu shot in action, and even trying out our onsite PCR machine with the IPAC team.

We wrapped up the day in the best way possible — spending the afternoon with our residents, helping the recreation team run Art Club and creating beautiful holiday crafts that will be sold at the Residents’ Council fundraiser this December.

What a day full of learning, laughter, and connection - An awesome day watching the next generation explore life in long-term care! 💙

We’re thrilled to celebrate four of our amazing team members — Caroline, Ann-Marie, Andrea, and Ashley — who are featured in the 2024/2025 CLRI Annual General Report! ✨

The report includes a 3-page spotlight on our home’s collaboration with CLRI, highlighting how their training and initiatives in person-centred care, palliative care, dementia support, preceptorship, and more have empowered our staff to keep growing in their roles. These opportunities not only strengthen the care we provide to residents and families but also support our colleagues and students, the future health care professionals of long-term care.

A heartfelt thank you to (CLRI) Ontario Centres for Learning, Research and Innovation in Long-Term Care for shining a light on our staff and for the ongoing partnership that continues to make such a meaningful impact in our home — and across the long-term care sector 💙

National Day for Truth and Reconciliation | September 30

Today, our home came together in reflection, learning, and solidarity as we honoured the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. This important day is a time to recognize the lasting impact of residential schools and to honour Survivors, their families, and Indigenous communities across Canada.

Residents and staff wore orange shirts as a symbol of our collective commitment to remembrance and reconciliation. Throughout the day, we engaged in thoughtful activities including educational presentations, video screenings, and meaningful crafts that reflected on Indigenous history and culture.

We are committed to supporting the ongoing conversations that foster understanding, respect, and healing.

Earlier this month, we hosted a Staff Appreciation BBQ & Carnival to celebrate the dedicated individuals who keep our long-term care home running—24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.

From “Dunk-a-Manager” and karaoke to carnival games, cotton candy, popcorn, and a great BBQ, the event was a fun and meaningful way to recognize the incredible efforts of our team. We’re deeply grateful to our staff who show up every single day to support our home and residents with compassion, care, and commitment.

Thank you to the Quality of Work Life Committee/Social Butterflies for organizing such a joyful event, and to all the managers for their enthusiastic support!

Our interdisciplinary team is excited to be heading into the 3rd and final day of the inaugural Best Practice Spotlight Organization (BPSO) Global Summit!

It’s been amazing engaging with supportive government officials, like the honourable .kusendova, Minister of Long-Term Care in Ontario & the honourable Deborah Richardson, Deputy Minister of Health, hearing about best practice guidelines implementation around the world and networking with other organizations to support our work.

We’re so excited to be bringing back so many new ideas to improve Humber Meadows as well as the newly launched People-Centred Care best practice guidelines. We’re looking forward to making the transition over the coming month — stay tuned!!

Today on World Alzheimer’s Day💜

In Ontario, over 334,500 people are currently living with dementia — a number expected to nearly triple in the next 30 years. Nationally, more than 770,000 Canadians are affected, with nearly 1 million projected by 2030.

At Humber Meadows, we take a person-centred approach to care, meeting each resident where they are. Through an interdisciplinary model, we ensure care is tailored to individual needs, dignity is preserved, and quality of life is at the heart of everything we do.

Today, our staff, residents, and families wore purple to show their support and help raise awareness. Together, we honour those living with Alzheimer’s, their caregivers, and the ongoing fight to end the stigma.

This week our residents took an afternoon trip to Hawaii for an end of summer luau celebration! 🌴 🌺

Aloha spirit filled the air as we embraced the rhythm of hula dancers, the joy of live music, — and even a few brave souls getting tattoos— while sipping on some tropical drinks!

As the sun sets on summer, we’re excited to be trading in our leis for cozy sweaters as we continue to make some more memories together.

Community Engagement Day | September 12

As part of we paused to celebrate the heart of our long-term care homes — the incredible people who turn walls into a community and a building into a family 💙

During LTC Community Engagement Day on September 12th we were honoured to recognize some of our residents and devoted family member Cate — individuals who embody kindness, positivity, and a deep sense of care for those around them. Through quiet moments, warm smiles, and unwavering compassion, they individuals have truly helped to shape the community we’re building at Humber Meadows.

Their presence is a reminder that it’s the people — not the place — who make a home. We’re grateful for the light they bring and the connections they help nurture within our walls.
